Just drive it and look it over. Run everything to see what works and what doesn't. Ask about oil consumption then check exhaust for blue smoke. Check tires for uneven wear. Bounce car to check suspension. Check engine area for oil and antifreeze leaks. Slam on brakes to test for even braking. Go to the Jeep forums for that model year and spend an evening reading about all the problems those vehicles have. Use that info to evaluate.

Power braking is a good way to test the acceleration and braking simultaneously. Efficiency. I'm sure the seller will be appreciative.

    ^^^^Amazing, isn't it.
Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

Rear main seal leak was the only issue I knew of with these jeeps. Everything else was solid or cheap to fix.
I rolled mine into the Boston Garden and even with a crushed roof and being upside down. It ran like balls!! I sold it on eBay to a nuclear engineer from CT who wanted to mutate two Cherokees into one for fun. Get one with a LSD rear end, auto, skid plates and no body rot. I'd shop in MD over MA.

Assuming this is your cape beater car and not for a Jr. ICE, why not get a wrangler, CJ or defender?

The kid needs wheels this summer (he's working but has zero money because of lax) and then I was gonna move it up there in the fall and leave it there. Not sure I trust him in a wrangler, plus the hounds, taking them to the beach in a wrangler might be too much of an adventure. Four of the fuckers.

Good point on buying here vs. there, that's what I was thinking with the salt and rust. They use it here but way less.

Open air jeeps and 4 dogs would probably result in a lot of vibes comments in a subsequent thread. I'd go with 97-01 Cherokee .

I knew someone with a Cherokee - I forget what year - that had a death wobble, so I googled:

    Just sayin'

The 4l inline 6 was also famous for cracked exhaust manifolds at about 60-75k. Around a $1000 job IIRC. But agreed they are otherwise dependable and the stuff that does go bad is fairly cheap to replace

kid found a listing for a car, an acura, 100k 04 super clean picture, sob story about a sick kid, needs cash for surgery......

    gets this email today

    From: Francisca Argote Mendez <fargotemendez72@gmail.com>
Date: June 12, 2014 at 7:51:19 PM EDT
    To: Son of a(n) MMP
    Subject: Re: Acura Tl

    Hi again,

As I told you in my first email I'm away most of the time I will not be able to deal in person (I'm a flight attendant). Before leaving I had prearranged the deal with eBay Motors so my presence isn't necessary. The Acura is located in Prospect, KY ready to be delivered. The car will arrive at your address in 2-3 working days. You will have 5 days to test it and inspect the car.

If you intend to move ahead and conclude this transaction, please email me back with the following information: your full name, shipping address and your phone number. eBay will notify you all the details about the shipping and payment (You'll receive important guidelines + instructions from them.). The shipping cost is included in the total price of the car!

    Thanks,
    Francisca

so whats the angle, is the name addy and phone enough to phish my kid out of his identity. Pretty sure that he cost of shipping a car from KY to MA is more than they are asking for the car. There are so many red flags we have obviously moved on, but wtf is the angle here?

You were right that it's a scam. Basically they try to get your money and not give you the car (duh). Pretending that ebay is handling the transaction somehow tends to give people a false sense of security. At some point you will be told the car is in transit and you need to pay some sort of fee, or the balance of the transaction or whatever, to get the car released/delivered/shipped.

It's basically 3-card monte where they shift things around really fast and you're positive you know which cup the car is under so you pay but then they pick up the cup and nada.Basically the opposite of the ones where someone offers to buy your shit and sends you a certified check so you send the shit but then days later the check turns out to be bogus.

but it had 2 sets of tires! buying a used car in this price range feels like I'm scheduling a date with disappointment.

Running good so far, passed inspection first time though. Kid put a new stereo in it this week (he's got his priorities, I've got mine), I put new tires on it and next week I'm just gonna get all the fluids changed out and it should be good to go for quite a while I hope.

Didja get a new icemobile yet? As someone who recently bought a beater jeep on cl I'm interested to see how this worked out for you.
Brandine: Now Cletus, if I catch you with pig lipstick on your collar one more time you ain't gonna be allowed to sleep in the barn no more!
    Cletus: Duly noted.

Just FYI because it's for your kid: Mazdas are like Hondas, Toyotas etc., but anything "MazdaSpeed" is more like Subi WRX or STI territory. A friend has a speed 3 (250+ hp), and that is a fast car.

I bought a 2000 Cherokee from a used-car place finally. I had to get it done and I got sick of people dicking around and not returning calls and emails on cl. Also people thinking their beaters were made out of gold. Paid too much but still under KBB. But it's clean, everything works, no accidents, one owner, clean carfax, no rust and has 115K on it. I could have bought the same car pretty much for probably $1500 less on CL but finally I pulled the trigger on it just to get it done. It's running like a champ right now, hope it stays that way, we'll see. Kid just drove off in it or I'd post a pic but you've seen a silver cherokee before.

Hey ice, if you're in MD, I've had good luck fudging the price with terry's tag and title. Usually I just put $500 and they don't blink an eye, I think its a $10 fee and much less of a headache to use them instead of the DMV

Hey MMP--ask the seller for an address and I'll go check it out. Like 10 min from me. That way you will certainly know if it's a scam or not.
