Banning folks like hugh, jer-bear, or even rog seems pretty weaksauce, but whomever owns the sandbox is free to decide how much pee is too much. I can think of only very few folks over the years who "deserved" it in my eyes. Hell, the hugeairdog wouldn't have lasted very long under the apparent standards.

At its core, "the community" started as a place for folks with similar experiences to communicate and pass time and grew eventually to share stories and photos of their shared days adventuring. I'm happy to read the documentation of someone's adventure (whether it be a deeper-esque trip or a meadow-skip through deep snow with the pooches) and relate it to my own experiences just as I'm happy to read someone's thoughts on a sporting match or movie that we've both watched. Less interesting than anything is the "stoke" that comes off as some self-promoting look at me/my facebook/my blog/my instafuck bullshit done to attract spancers or fulfill promotional requirements. A fine and hard-to-define line, but the old phrase "you know it when you see it" applies. As the internet and this place have changed (thanks Rob!), so has the output.

Finally, to pretend the purpose of this place as a stoke factory whilst ignoring the page clicks and ad revenue devoted to political bickering seems a bit disingenuous. ramble, ramble ramble...

This keeps getting quoted and as TGR's hired public relations robot whose sole purpose it is to overtake this self-generated community with tonedeaf moderation decisions and use my practiced and kind-hearted listening techniques to get you to post less anti-semitic shit, my programming has told me I should contribute to the unique conversation currently happening here between respected community participants and active action & adventure sport enthusiasts.

Whatever your opinions are on TGR Official's handling of the boards, just know it's a work in progress. Since TGR420 hasn't had as much time to get involved, it's been a lot of splat, commonlaw and Tye1on trying to hold things together with no support from HQ on pretty much anything until lately. Since then my team has been working from a dead stop to really get a handle on what goes on here, with my few years lurking and posting ski sale threads under a different handle as my only real experience here prior to last fall. It's a slow work in progress, and I think we are pretty wary of fucking things up here, which any corpo overlord is predisposed to do. Moderation is pretty clear point in that regard, and a super narrow fine line to cross. Raj got dropped because the Tunnel Creek comments pushed a number of people over the edge who'd grown fed up with his shit. Bummer to see as the guy's actually a good dude in person, and offered to show me around Mt. Washington when I was back East. Consideration of others under the ban umbrella are going to be tricky at best and controversial/upsetting regardless. But we only want to introduce some new roolz that discourage the most outrageous violations of human decency. We don't want someone have to deal with getting called a "kike" out of the blue after he tries to sell a jacket. But even in trying to provide the most base level of standards here, we get that drawing that line is going to be tough without falling into the trap of selective/subjective moderation. But don't freak out yet, we're still listening.

As Klar mentioned, I've reached out to some people beyond the mods just to bounce ideas off of them and get honest feedback on shit we're considering with the site and the forums. Soon we'll get out some kind of survey to the board too to get your (gasp!) real live ideas about what would make life better here. In advance I'll ask you to please be more specific than "fuck off nerd!" in your input. Maybe fix the Tapatalk issues that have gone unanswered from tech support for months? A search function that actually searches? Upload tools so I don't have to go to Flickr and back again 80 times to post my photo album of Hugh's mom? Those are a few things we got in the works, and we'll ask for more feedback in our continuing quest to offer customer service that resembles real customer service.

A few other notes from our point of view that you may or may not believe:
-We will not force you to love the community. If you wanna post look-at-me-stoke or just like the formatting there or the chance to get picked up by our ed team and social feeds, we're psyched. But you don't need to be some Everest-conquering backcountry bro brah to be a part of this sandbox and be a valued mag, and I don't need to tell you that. But we'd like to give you some better upload tools for sharing cool shit in here, too.
-Yes, part of TGR's business is being able to serve ads on the pages that exist because you guys populate them. The Padded Room is the biggest part of these forums, and is full of all that non-epic shit that is fun to waste time on, share trivial dog walks on, bitch about non-extreme-sports-sports-teams and Game of Thrones. PolyAss is pretty big as well, so that's not going to end up going away, but if you absolutely hate it we will make sure it affects your forum life as little as possible. Point being is that the community that the mags have fostered in the boards have as much to do with those areas of the site as Ski/Snowboard.
-Yes, technically this is OUR (TGR/Todd/overlords) sandbox, but it goes both ways. We need the pageviews, after all .
-We really don't want to ban people.

So at the end of this extended babel, probably all phony marketing bullshit press release material recast partially in the language of the tribe, just hold it in your sweet endearing hearts that TGR actually involving itself in the forums is a new thing (at least recently), we're listening to you, we're trying to figure shit out and not fuck things up here, and really trying not to involve ourselves in ways that are not super productive. Yes, sometimes we will do shit that will piss some people off. But really the team and I are trying to figure out how to go from non-supportive, non-involved overlords to people who actually provide customer service and support good shit and good people here in the long run. I appreciate the response and communication - it was really just some navel gazing in response to todd's thoughts on hugh which I disagreed with/found ironic. And to clarify, I wasn't talking about the new web or forum tools with the "look at me" stoke stuff; I was referring to a couple posters off the top of my head whose trs just aren't that interesting because of the tone, regardless of the content or location.

As to the moderation aspects, I can certainly see how some comments could create a ruckus for the powers that be. I've always been of the mind that people should feel free to express themselves and then an individual or group can choose where on the spectrum (from marginalization to embrace) to place that person based on their chosen words. I'd rather be free to make my own decision about who or what to engage with, and have the whole history (ie not a deleted or moderated record), than have someone else making the decision. People have always been banned for super destructive behaviour, but shitting on someone's dead friends because you like to play dumb cunt on the interwebs is different. Such cunts should have to own the record of their cuntry.
