My J-hole Er/Icu TR. (another one bites the dust)

wahoo! finally back in logan after what is likely the most traumatic event of my young life. Heres the story. So my brother and I head to jackson on Wedsnday of last week, Arrive at the hill about nine thirty and catch the tram up not too long after that. We head down Rendevous bowl, The snow is nice - 6" of creamy windblown. when we get down to the bottom of the bowl I air off may a 4' rock right as my brother crosses below me. I clip his helmet with my tip and its sends me spinning. He got a small scratch on his face. I got a broke tibia and fibia right at the boot top. The next 24 hours are a mess of 3000' vert of taboggan riding, Lots of morophine and a big rod being shoved and screwed into my leg. I dont really remember that part too well. After that is where things got a bit complicated. I was doing fine till and all on schedule to come home by friday at the latest. Until they figured out somehow fat from my leg got into my lungs and was really screwing things up (fatty emboli syndrome) That resulted in me on a breathing mask in the ICU for a few days all complicated by my body not liking pain killers. But, I returned home on Monday and Am focusing in on Rehabing. Unfortunatley my ski Season is over but I dont want this to ruin my summer. SO, has anyone has a similar injury and care to Advise?

Good lord! I was cringing the whole time reading that. You should be happy you're with us right now! Glad to see you're out of the ICU and in good spirits. I thought I had it bad with a ACL pop before heading to Tahoe, you definitely take the cake. Although, you rival Plakespear's meeting with a tree at JH during the first day at the summit. He was all morphed up too for a few days.

Get well mang! Hit the PT hobbling, I sure am!

A friend broke his tib-fib at the top of the boot and was in a cast for 6 months. For whatever reason the bone didn't heal very fast. Probably didn't drink enough milk.

So he broke his leg. Then we got on the plane with a bunch of drunken yahoos, flew to Vancouver, oops fog, flew back to Kelowna, got bussed to the hotel with a bunch of drunken yahoos at 1am, stayed overnight, got on a plane with a bunch of hung-over yahoos, flew to Vancouver, and went home.

get yourself digital cable, with the dvr option, or at least a stack of good books to pass the time. distract thyself from the situation, says i. best of luck, and wishes for a speedy recovery.

His brother is the lucky one - could have spelled a quick death sans helmet or a hit in the spine/neck. Chilling reminder to look before you leap, which i have been guilty of not doing my share of.

Get well man, best of luck - I tore my acl once upon a time, but a broken bone really makes me cringe

Any "ICU psychosis" to report? I had an adverse reaction to a seditive in the ICU and spent one day thinking the hospital was fake and trying to escape it, one day cursing the oxygen mask they fitted me with (pulminary embolism) and the Indiannapolis Colts who I was convinced had fitted me with said mask (again- psychosis), and the third day calm but very concerned about the well-being of my grandchildren (I was 27 at the time). Not so fun- but a great story to be able to tell.

Hope you heal fast. Glad to hear your out of the hospital, pulminary 'accidents' like yours and mine can easily kill a person. Glad to hear it didn't get'cha. Stay up!

Had a friend who broke his tib / fib right at the boot top as well - he thought that the ER doc was going to pull his leg off while he was removing his boot.

The break was two years ago, and he still has not healed properly, however I think this has more to do with the fact that he is a dumbass more than anything else.

Duker - glad to hear that you are relatively ok. Do everything you can do to make sure that your bones heal. You can rebuild muscle mass and increase cardio later, but if your bones don't heal properly, yer facked. Good luck dude...heal strong.

Sux but at least you'll have the summer and hopefully sunny days to enjoy.

When you get to the point when your wanting to get out I suggest hitting the deck of your local brew pub and soaking up some rays to trigger production of Vit D and rebuild those bones while you consume copious amounts of hops and barley.

Don't forget - you should be eligible for a temporary disabled parking pass. Those things are great - seriously.

Holy crap. That sucks man. Glad to hear things are back on the right track. I guess it's fortunate that your brother didn't sustain a more serious injury as well.

Hang in there man. Different people have different recovery times. I'm 3 weeks out of surgery and am doing partial weight bearing (like standing), hope to get on a stationary bicycle later this week and be on a cane next week. My break was slightly different, the tib broke close to the ankle (hence my ankle has been shot) and my fib broke closer to the boot top. Here's my story, copied and pasted from another thread:

Scored first chair and it was looking like it'd be one of the greatest days of all time for me. Wanted to check little Jim's off of the list and today would have been perfect for it. Second run, I followed Anton down lower Cham, got separated and during a mach speed run out further below, broke my tibia and fibula . My leg looked pretty damn twisted and it was one long ass day. FUCK. Now it's land of percocet and vicodin. Oh well, could have been worse and this year has been a blast. Kill it mags!

    P. S. Big thanks to Kirkwood Ski Patrol and everyone at the clinic. Great job.

Keep a positive attitude, etc. Sounds like your experience was more scary in terms of the lung incident. It's shitty man, no way around it, especially if you're the kind of person who moves around a lot. Time man, it takes TIME, have patience and get ready to be back next season.

    P. S. ---> The parking pass is key, you can get a DMV authorization form signed by your doc. Also, keep a couple of gallon water containers at different places throughout the house (by bed, in kitchen, TV room etc.). If you're on lots of pain pills, think about a fiber supplement. One more thing...elevating the broken leg (so it is ABOVE your heart) will reduce swelling. Basically anytime you're not standing, you should be doing this for the first couple of weeks.
