surely you can imagine a scenario where the dad wasn't responsible even if legally, the driver is always responsible. Car parked in driveway, bike laid down behind the car and not visible, dad comes out of the house, gets in the car, and backs up. Do you walk around your entire car every time before you drive away?

when you have a 6yo, they leave shit around and make poor choices -- not quite what older kids might do

perhaps i'm reading some cruelty into foggy's comment in the method of delivering the learning moment where maybe there wasn't any

i do take extra care backing up with my vehicle because i know it doesn't offer good visibility -- that may be unique to me owning a large vehicle

but i also am not inclined to pile on after the kid is out a bike. Sure, natural consequences are reasonable; but additional blame-the-victim efforts as a presumptive teaching moment seem cruel -- maybe generational kid rearing differences

either way, the kid in this story above locked a bike in a bike room that purportedly had security video...whether he or his dad called the property owner to find out details of the theft, it seems like they deserved better answers, even if the owner was never going to replace the bike or even offer any apologies

I think fatnslow's main gripe was that they did not bother to contact anybody even after they knew a theft had occurred. Agree that is shitty and I had a storage facility do the same thing to me once. They had a bunch of units broken into including mine and did not tell anybody. It was six months before I got back to town and by then it was too late to do anything, my shit had been pawned long ago. I took them to small claims court and lost because of all the releases you sign when you get a storage space. The storage place surprised me by meeting me outside court and giving me a check for half what I sued for. They said they felt bad and knew they should have done a better job, but went to court anyway just to see if their releases would hold up.

Lost a large collection of rare imported punk rock albums that makes me want to cry to this day.

I would tend to agree. I understand fatnslow's frustration but I think he has unrealistic expectations of college town apartments and property managers, no matter how "high-end". I graduated CU in 02 and if I had a bike stolen from an apartment rack, locked or unlocked, I would have expected the same response from any of the property mangers/landlords I had; they don't give a shit and you shouldn't expect them to. We had to fight for almost every single security deposit we put down. College town landlords are some of the slimiest shitheads on around IME, don't be so surprised.

I agree 100 % college town property management is the lowest common denominator. I didn't want or expect compensation. I merely made a suggestion they should consider altering their policy when on site thefts occur sending a informative email to help with any recovery. It was met with complete condescending FU message and tone. I previously went round and round about getting a deposit return with another company after my oldest kids roomies were stonewalled by another company. After I left a honest review online they had checks ready next day. I only did this because it was MY MONEY and my kid has been trying for about 6 weeks. I guess it's on me for having any sort of customer service expectation then to be met with accusations and blatant rudeness.

kid confirmed his HS extra credit will allow him to do a BS & MS in 4yrs -- he thought he could just add a semester to get it done, but in talking w/ his dept head, the dean suggested the idea of doing it all in 4yrs. With his department on board, it's a cool path to maybe pushing into R&D for a career (who really knows at this point...but he's thinking that direction)
he also confirmed his scholarship money is still good even after he technically graduates a semester early & starts grad school (higher $/credit tuition)

i know he had my brilliance ( [i never had a 4.0] ), but also my adhd, so grinding & checking off critical path tasks was not my strong suit
and he seems happy, not stressed; getting outside & meeting all his responsibilities equally
just wanting to boast a little here...so proud

That’s awesome! I had friends and coworkers that took advantage of a 5-year bachelors/masters program at UCSD. Looking back, it really set them up for some successes in their careers. For one, it helped them realize they didn’t want to pursue a PhD and continue on a track that they realized they would not enjoy.

Our sophomore has been back for a few weeks. He has a mentorship job on campus which required him getting back to school early. It seemed nice to have a slow start to the school year rather than moving in a starting class within a day or two. He’s stoked to be back with his school friends.

Last year was a tough ending with the campus turning into a policed state and most of campus closed off with cyclone fencing. New administrators at school, so hopefully things will be different this year.

He also has some wiggle room with his course work from taking college courses in HS. So far he’s picking up a minor. Chem major with physics minor. He and friends are camping in the redwood park his weekend, and a few went backpacking last weekend.

Years ago our kid was in a frat house at Cal. He told the management company the lock on his door wasn't working. They couldn't be bothered to fix it, until everyone moved out at the end of the semester and then they fixed it, after stealing everything he left in the room for the next year. Obviously they denied and no proof, but his was the only room stolen from and the front door of the building was locked.
