TR: Sun. Pow. Fun. Waddington Hut (14/03/09)

    "Leaving Vancouver? What about skiing?"

How many times did I hear that...

Well, on vacation, back in Vancouver, and of course, I get spoiled once again.

The season in BC (or seemingly all over western NA) started off pretty shitty to say the least... but obviously with my arrival, the snow came, and there was fun to be had. With a week off with the boys, and all other plans down the shitter, we decided to head north (as per usual). Stability/Conditions/Weather were all concerns, but in the end, we were probably the luckiest group skiing around that area all season. Stability was as good as it was going to get considering the season thus far, conditions and weather were... good to say the least.

After a pretty last minute decision, and some quick packing, we were on the road. Parking, 6.5 hours of hiking in, and a good nights rest later, we woke up to this... Oh so worth it.

Obviously with major concerns pretty much every day, there was a whole lot of pit digging going on... The first two of many...

With the green light, some of the boys were ready to drop in.

The 'clouds' rolled in... I tried to get artsy... the result.

Then the clouds left, and we were back at sending it. Spoiled, I know.

    Pillows and pow.

Our first full 'hard' day of skiing... Rough life indeed... the boys enjoying some sun.

    Nights were cold, but pleasant.

Day 3. Lets get higher. So we did.

The boys checking out the alpine. Looked fun, but tons of hazards...

... so instead, we found some rocks to play with.

    Then we went skiing!

    Claming it.

    point it going big.

Day 4. More fun. More jumping off stuff.

    Day 5.
point it and myself decided to go for a little adventure. It seemed like a harmless bootpack, but turned into a full day event.

View from the top (spot Joffre and Matier?). These views never get old.

    Spot the skier?

Skiing down, after another fun rap.

Rap you say? Rapping down switch, camera in hand... Prussik oh-so-slowly sliding while trying to stabilize the camera.

Coming out of the couloir... after a long day.

    Day 6?

    Time to go home.

Again, another sick week out, and soon, time to head back 'home'. Some more skiing to be done, as it never really ends, but another great trip in the books.

Maybe some more stoke will come... maybe not...

    but until next time.

That place is cool and it's hard to beat the price. Looks like you made some tasty lemonade, especially with those yellow-light conditions.

Spending a few nights reading the hut's collection of UBC VOC journals convinced me that I really should have applied to college in your country. Unlike VOC trips, at my university all-girl, nude, round-the-hut rando racing never really was a "thing." And "motivational bowls" being published in university-printed book just wouldn't have happened. Glad the VOC folks were able to document those trips so eloquently.

Glad you boys were able to enjoy some JR Tolken-inspired peaks.
