CDOT holds the bag for allowing this insanity. How could they possibly think it was sensible to cram all I70 traffic onto a smaller, steeper, more weather impacted road like Loveland Pass when they had hundreds of miles of I70 shut down?
Yesterday was the worst "ski" traffic I've ever been in. I drove 11 miles yesterday and it took me 2.5 hours to do it.
Except it was NOT really ski traffic at all because it was just dealing with Westbound I70 being shoved onto WB US6 on a Sunday afternoon/evening during a winter storm.

Well that part about the lift lines is just not true. Waited in 2 actual lines yesterday and those were both first thing in the morning. Other than that a minute or two. maybe that.
I see your I70 and raise you Speer Blvd in Denver:
We drove by this early Saturday morning, takes a special kinda person to just leave their car in the creek.
I've been thinking of getting one because I feel like I'm surrounded by idiots when driving
Pretty much every dump truck and heavy hauler in summit county has a dash cam because of so many near misses with drivers pulling out in front of them and desperately trying to get around their trucks without any regard to safety
on another note, I'm not sure what the problem was this weekend with traffic, oh that's right I never left breck
Drove to Keystone and Abasin, but luckily missed most of the shitshow.
Another weird observation: There were gapers who didn't even know how to carry their skis (seriously? you think a bear hug is the most efficient way to carry that stuff?) walking up the highway from parking at least 2-3 miles from the ski area. It looked like the trail of tears! So you are gonna was 3 miles in ski boots, uphill, in a storm, along a highway, at 10k+", bear hugging your skis, and then go skiing?
This was at noon. No idea why they couldn't catch a shuttle ride. Also, by the time they got to the ski area, the lower lot was going to be open again.

saw plenty of texas suitcases this weekend around town
it's not a bad way to carry skis if you think about it
also saw somebody on a split board (in split mode) in the bc having a really really hard time trying to ski, almost took some poor girls face off after he decided to shoulder the skis which didn't work for him either
spring break is here!
Vibes to everyone that sat through that mess yesterday. The skiing was more than worth it in my opinion though. Had friends still not through the tunnel well past 10pm... They should have known better, but still.
Sometimes you just have to grab your ankles and take one for snow like that. Price you pay for living in the big shitty.

I was lucky enough to get slammed into by a steamboat resort truck before getting to enjoy 6 hours of that mess. I was pleasantly surprised by how well i70 moved after idaho springs though.
8 HOURS TO GET TO THE FIRST TURN
Yesterday at 2PM on Pali guy said he left Denver at 6a, got to Abasin, lots were full, went to Keystone, lots were full, drove to Breck, ate lunch with his dad, went to drive home, had to go over Loveland, stopped and found a spot, he was going up for his first lap at 2p.
SKI THE PASS YO!
I saw dozens of people walking/skiing/boarding down US6 at 3:30 yesterday from Abasin... I asked one and he said he was walking to the lot thats about 2.5 miles down because nobody would give him a ride. I pointed out he was going faster than traffic, but there were shuttles.
PUSHING ALL THE WAY TO THE BASIN
On the way up yesterday in the stop an go after traffic was released from avalanche control, I saw a minivan 3 cars up stop, slider door comes open, guy jumps out and pushes the van then runs and jumps in... they did this at least 12 times on the way up. Never seen anything like it. As I walked past them I let them know there was a large fine if they had gotten stuck. "Oh it's fine! It's a rental!"
LETS DRIVE THE WRONG WAY ON THE HIGHWAY!
On the way down traffic was stop and go. Crazy idiot in a white SUV decides he's just going to drive the entire way down in the wrong lane! The vehicle behind me, and I, pull out. White SUV starts flashing lights and honking, tries to drive around on the right shoulder, gets around the car behind me, tries to cut in front of me, but since I notice the large gap the car has left behind the douche white SUV that I can get into, I nose up to the truck I've been following. We creep along, they keep swerving toward me like they are gonna ram me or cut in front. As we are doing 0-3mph, I roll down my window and ask:
"Why is it OK for you to drive the whole way down in the wrong lane when everyone else here sits in line?"
20something guy : "What lane are you in now motherfucker?"
"That would be the lane you wish you were in. "
"Fuck you! Pull in behind me! Pull behind me! You are unsafe!" followed by a string of profanity and waving of middle finger out the window... car behind begins flashing brights at him.
Smiling: "Nah I can do this all the way to Keystone if you want."
"FUUUUCK!" rolls up window.
So we creep down US6 like this for about 10 minutes until I see some opposing headlights. I quickly merge in behind crazy white SUV who attempts to pass the truck several more times over the next 30 minutes on the way down, but never succeeds. At one point when traffic stops, driver and passenger both get out and pee in the road. When they finally get down to Keystone, they proceed to cut off someone in the right lane swerving in the slush with much horn honking. While I probably should have left that alone because he was probably drunk or insane, but it was really really really hilarious.

FYI I-70 is closed at Bethel and US-40 is closed between Empire and Berthoud Falls for the next several hours. Avy mitigation work appears to have been impressive.
Same
should be a quiet day on the hill, wish they coulda done this yesterday...TRAVEL ALERT:
CDOT just brought down TONS of snow while mitigation for avalanche danger is underway. The interstate is covered. ALL lanes by 3-feet deep about 1 mile west of Herman Gulch.
