So what is the collective thought on next Sunday turns and then heading to SB party in Denver? On the road by noon maybe?
I plan everything around avoiding that mess, but this one might have to be endured.

I was one of those suckers. Thanks for the heads up on the sign down near Keystone CDOT. Sign said "heavy traffic on US 6/LL pass-expect delays". I wish it would've said "we're closing the fucking road due to too much traffic". How long has that been a thing on a dry road, bluebird day??
I left breck at 2:30, 5 hour drive to my house in Estes Park. I ended up wasting ~2 hours thanks to that LL pass side trip bullshit. I was so depressed when I had to turn around at A basin and restart the traffic cluster fuck down into Dillon and back onto 70. Got turned around at Abasin at ~3:30, went thru the tunnel at ~5:15. I can't say I didn't expect a major shit show, but that LL pass closure fucked me major.
Ha! I had no idea the Xgames were even happening. CDOT really knows how to fuck people. We checked the site to try to figure out what was going on. Saw the "Heavy Traffic...delays" sign. No mention of the fact they were turning everyone around. What dicks. Glad we just had to go to Dillon.
just when I thought no one was gonna complain about 70 this weekend
not letting me down
breck wasa gong show at 6 pm on sunday, everyone thought they'd wait out the traffic and drive home easy later on, well how'd that work for you?
drove the family down to denver on sat to go shopping and it was painfull to see it backed up from dumont to chief hoser, I give props to everyone who deals with that, I give bigger props to me for maintaining 80 mph the whole way up and down and only using the horn once
This is what I'm talking about. I put about ~40 days at Jane last year..most of it weekday with a handful of weekend(Sat/Sun). I NEVER ran into 40 traffic. This year..even on Thursday/Friday's I am running into traffic all over 40 before Jones'. This is the last year I'm doing WP season pass actually, going to check out Loveland next season...and 50% of that decision is that Berthoud is becoming a fucking show.
Dumb fuckage is at an all time high. Horns are needing to be replaced. Moron drivers abound.
BP is usually better than the alternative, maybe the traffic signal in Empire was the culprit.
I wouldn't call that road a shitshow (unless you're referring to all the people at the summit tracking up the low hanging fruit), but big delays are never fun. Oh well, it's not going to ruin a good day on the hill.

That is fucking ridiculous. Why would they flat out close the road and instead just stop traffic by the Sisters, wait till it clears on the other end, and let traffic continue until it backs up again? Sending people back to the shitshow in Dillon and the Tunnel metering is so retarded.
Maybe they should build an avy tunnel like they have in Europe on the stretch of 6, by the Sisters?
The Hwy 6 merge causes backups which extend into the tunnel. Once that happens they start metering which has far west reaching effects. If the exit from the tunnel is clear they can minimize metering and things will flow much better. I know it's not popular but closing the Hwy 6 merge in the afternoons on weekends is probably the best solution CDOT can put into effect right now. It would suck for loveland and and a basin skiers but it'll directly effect the cluster that is the drive between Dillon/silverthorn and the tunnels and fix a problem CDOT has been trying to fix for a long time. You could probably let Loveland traffic enter but with VERY long waits between cars and still get the same effect.
Not saying it's why they closed it but I wouldn't be surprised if it is.

They aren't going to close the 6 merge for Loveland skiers ever. Don't be silly.
They shouldn't close it for Abasin.
What they should do is close the 6 entry at Keystone at about 2PM on heavy traffic days so that all the people coming from Keystone and Breck trying to skip the tunnel mess don't gum up the works even worse.
Of course if you have a local ID you should be let through![]()

Think of it as traffic socialism. Just don't enact it on days I'm at a basin please.
They should just pave Argentine pass, duh...
Nice. I like this post. I'm an asshole and have a tendency to get a bit bratty in much the same way. I have been punched in the face though. A few times. I've seen that bright fucking light that comes on when you take a good one ('s what happens to me anyways).
Funny. I was actually there that day. Was in Dotsero at 7:00 as they were clearing it. We passed the avy crew on the Berthoud Falls side of the pass rendezvousing at a pull out. Wife and I decided to nap in the car but didn't wake up until 8:45. Oddly, lot was still a bit empty at that time BUT I see "a bunch of assholes ALREADY lined up" (which, yes, at 8:45 you might expect them to be) and start basically blaming my wife for sleeping in.
Well, she's a tolerant and strong person, gets me to fucking check myself and we go grab some breakfast. Smoking a cig and drinking a beer on the upper balcony watching the line not getting any bigger. Watch the lift open, people clear out going up and then there's no line. 10 or so minutes later we got right on to the lift and viola! powder! We lapped Gauge several times but it blew up at about 10:30 or 11 so we went to Pep's. I heard that avy crew we passed had the pass shut down for a little while.
Skied Eldo a few time after that but went up to MJ last weekend on Saturday. On the Friday Night before, I tell my wife, its cool, we should sleep in a bit, even if we get caught in traffic, the snow will be the same all day, nothing fresh to speak of. we took that a bit too literally and were passing the Morrison exit at about 6:55. WOOPS! Traffic was sooooooooo bad. the infuriating thing was it was JUST congestion. dry roads, no accidents. I swore to never leave at that time again. It was the first time we hadn't beaten the traffic this season. I fucking lost it in the car again. Wife had to chill me out again. Corona lot was about half full when we got there. Got some breakfast and went straight to Peps for a couple mugs. Skied during the lunch lull and went back to Peps, skied more after that. It was like everybody stopped skiing at 1, the lines were so short. Usually I too like to be gone by 1 but due to late arrival we were leaving at like 4 but it turned out to be a badass day and we both skied hard. Traffic on 70 coming back was not bad.
I don't know what all that amounts to. I guess its just pointing out that i am an incorrigible asshole; I dunno. Man, I needa chill out though, its pretty awesome when you get to ski, period.
Many years ago, I was at Steamboat with my friends. (I usually tell the rest of the story as if I heard it, but I didn't). My friend skis up to me near a lift and is laughing and is like "did you hear that?" I say "no." he says "Oh man, that kid, is saying to his dad THAT FRICKING RUN is the ENTIRE FRICKING REASON we came on this FRICKING TRIP!" I gotta remind myself to not be that kid.
Wow, that kids got to be thirty by now.... I wonder if he remembers that.

Closing the pass for non-weather reasons doesn't seem very smart to me. You gonna close the tunnel every hour for the haz trucks? That'll fuck things up way worse than leaving it open.
I've missed US 6 safety controls this year. Have they changed their procedure from last year (everyone queues up while they release 100 cars at a time to pass under 7 Sisters)? It's hard to tell, since CDOT modified their language.

Interesting quasi off topic ramble. But what the heck, I'll play......I always try to ski in search of the run that made the trip. Last weekend was a family trip. My youngest is a blue groomer kinda girl. Don't get me wrong, skiing with the kids makes for a satisfying weekend but I had promised to take my mom up whales tail. I knew I had one chance to get my fix. Skied t-bar to Imperial, imperial to Kenosha and top of Kenosha down to the base of 7 like it was my only chance to get my fix for the day. Snow wasn't great and the terrain wasn't anything special but I skied it as hard as I could and at least felt like a fucking boss. That series of three runs alone would have made the trip worth it.
Well that sucks. I only got stuck in a control over the pass one time last year.
Of course, I would have preferred clear sailing (it added about 45 minutes to the trip over the pass), but compared with the option of driving all the way back to Silverthorne and through the tunnel, it was certainly the preferred option.
I wonder how much the last month's high snow totals factor into the decision making. I suppose we'll find out as the snowpack continues to stabilize.
