People need to learn to drive but it seems like cdot was caught completely off guard. The roads were awful.
Agree with CDOT plowing...even this morning at 11am, the tunnel to Copper was icy and snowpacked. It doesn't bother me but traffic was slooooow because of the Jettas or Accords with no snow tires. It seems they could do a better job...more plows, better de-icing, clear the right lane better so morons don't stay in the left.

After receiving the amount of snow and traffic the roads saw yesterday, CDOT would need jack hammers to clear that ice off the roadways. Realistically, there's only so much they can do, it is winter, and this happens EVERY winter.

Is there a de-icer product they can use to help that?

I'm sure they are rationing all that mag chloride for later in the season. Maybe you should write them a letter and pass along some of your sage advice.

It always seems to me that the iciest roads are early and late season, when (I assume) the roads are warmer and the snow melts/freezes a lot quicker.

What does an icy place like New England do? Do they treat their roads better?

Your alternate is road salt, and that destroys the underbody of the car.

Surely there's absolutely no difference in the ecosystem here vs the east coast. And I doubt it would have any effect on the water supply or general ecosystem in the headwaters of the Colorado river.

Foot of snow compacted into ice. It was -10F overnight and this morning. Mag chloride is not a miracle worker.

    I've noticed the same pattern.

That, combined with the "dreaded 5-8K altitude zone". Somewhere in this zone, there tend to be transitional temperatures and a lot of melt/freeze activity (obviously worse early and late in the year).

On Saturday we left my house at 2:30am, got to berthoud pass at 3:54, the drive up was pretty smooth, roads were a little snowy so we did about 45/50mph most of the way. Skied BP from about 4:30 - 9 and headed home, massive shit show heading west bound through Idaho springs to floyd hill. The crowds and traffic are avoidable if you know how to do it. BP was epic, great snow for November.

Living in the front range is sweet. When I'm not traveling for work I can see snowcapped mountains from my office window and when I want to be a badass and ski "backcountry" I can leave at 2:30 AM to avoid the crowds. Some coworkers heard that I'm a skier so they invited me to see the new Warren Miller movie.

This is seriously my life as a weekend warrior.

I heard the new toll lane is gonna be all heated, and have a nicer view, and give free handy's while you're driving, and get you to the mountains 1852 seconds faster than all the other lanes. Heated lanes, dude...

Skied from 1a - 5am yesterday at Loveland Pass, nice dawn patrol session and absolutely ZERO crowds and ZERO traffic, I was in work by 8am.

No, the north east has snow and ice on their roads, and some places put down straight salt.

It should be mandatory for all winter service personnel on interstate highways to spend a January with the NYS thruway folks. They know how to keep a road open.

With self driving cars, solar powered handjobs while heading to the hills are the fucking future man.
