Sorry to ruffle your feathers, but I was trying to convey the fact that the traffic on the I70 corridor might have increased slightly since the 60's. I'd call that moderately informative. And I don't drive I70 to ski, but it is a major economic engine in the area. Slowing it down to a crawl for tire inspections isn't really feasible.

Then, do you have a more effective option that would make a difference with the real problem of ill-equipped vehicles causing most of the problems? Or should problems be dealt with after the crash happened?

That would be great, every cop in the state would be stuck on the side of I70 with a penny in their hand, checking to make sure tread was deeper than Abe Lincoln's hairdo. Good day to rob a bank.
How about some sort of mandatory inspection for Colorado plates. Passing it by (say, December 1st) gets you some sort of transponder for your windshield. You could mandate it for all rental cars out of DIA as well. Granted, this leaves out of state vehicles, but it would sure bite into the problem. It ain't perfect, but much more complicated problems have been solved with technology.

A steep patch of ice just outside Morrison to test traction. You don't make it up, you go back home.

I do think that requiring snow tires on rental cars would help. Or what Galbier mentioned. But you'll never get people to not drive like morons. You can't fix stupid.

No, you can't fix stupid, and there's plenty of stupid on I70, but snow tires for rentals would be a good step.

I like the mandatory inspection idea too.

Huge fines (enforced) for vehicles that are ill-prepared and cause an accident, backup or leave a boat in the right lane during a storm.

Make fines for causing accidents hurt. The truck fines today are nothing. Cause a closure due to bad tires....10k fine.

Requiring snow tires and AWD / 4WD is low hanging fruit, but it can’t be proactively enforced in an efficient manner. CDOT should be a more liberal in mandating those requirements.

CDOT was walking the lots of ski areas last year and checking tires. They were putting leaflets on windows with discounts on snow tires. Saw them in Mary Jane lots and the Luv. I suspect they will do it again this year. Actually was surprised how many cars had the leaflets due to low tread.

Also.... this means CDOT walking the lots while your booting up or having a safety meeting, stay safe.

Edit: It was a mix of CDOT and CSP doing the tire checks.

Not too-far-enough. Needs to be summary execution and torching the offending vehicle.

All I have to say is...God Bless road construction workers in Colorado...... if this was any other state east, this shit would have taken decades.......

CDOT is not perfect and I hope they get it right more often. Managing weather events is not easy from a public transportation standpoint.

Trucks are the main problem effecting flow of traffic up and down hills and around corners, at peak hours.

Did the truck plummet off the side?

Sounds like some crazy early backcountry danger up there.

More than anything else I'm looking forward to the "gentle nudge" trucks. Should come in handy next time there's a boat abandoned on the interstate.

Love it, but let's change "hundreds" to "thousands." Make it hurt!

"Under Code 15, a driver who does cause a traffic backup and is not prepared with proper winter gear on their vehicle, could face hundreds of dollars in fines by the Colorado State Patrol."
