Anddd...I70 West is now closed. Good job weather.
You don't need snow tires until you need snow tires.
Snow tires rarely needed around Denver area, unless you have to drive places regardless of weather. As for going to the mountain, you don't NEED them unless it is snowy, in which case they help a ton. But are you ok with running snows and driving on pavement 98% of the time you're down in Denver, so that you have the peace of mind when you hit I-70? Your call.

pfft I never use or need snow tires. I'm just a better driver than the rest of you nancys![]()
I never “need them”. But they help a lot when the rest of you gaper fuck up.
I appreciate the response, I'll probably throw a pair on. These 65 degree days even into next week are just throwing me off.
Trail report
Vail Pass was a hoot at 630am.
Definitely top 10 dirtiest shorts drive, maybe in the top 3.
But, I managed to survive in my rental Hyundai (Subi in the shop).
Back over the pass at 6pm to Summit. Still snowing steadily, but way less wind. Clean shorts, but I got annoyed enough going 17mph that I passed a plow, in my rental Hyundai, got the full effect of the horn.
the drugs made me realize it's not about the drugs
Just drove over Vail pass westbound and was about to say how it will be closed shortly, only to notice on Twitter that it closed 3 minutes ago.
Passed about 15 semis - not a single one had chains. Double trailer getting real sideways at one point. Road was snow packed and it was still coming down pretty solid.

go upside down.
I think that truckers who don't put chains on should have to spend a few nights in jail. The entire time they'll be forced to watch driving safety videos with their eyes propped open like in clockwork orange. Then on they day of their release, they are stripped naked and forced to walk down the local Main Street like Cersei Lannister. Maybe then they'd learn to put their chains on.
I read that he was driving for a Texas company. Is that where he was first trained and licensed? I think 110 years from what seems to be an industry wide lack of training, experience, and relaxed licensing requirements is egregious.
*ETA: I should clarify that I absolutely believe he deserves jail time as the decision making and responsibility of driving a big rig is ultimately his own.

thats a bad idea the cost to tax payers would be stupid to put them in jail
how do we keep the withdrawal syptoms at bay? we would need to pay someone to refill their big gulp every half hour plus all the food off the rollers from 7-11 that that need to be constantly consuming will bankrupt the county and then we are not even getting into the plumbing issues
Maybe this will help w/ traffic:

CDOT has their hands full with 70 around Eisenhower. Saw a car eastbound outside Silverthorne stopped in the middle of the highway putting on chains. Wet snow set up real slick.
Heads up!
CDOT has planned a closure tomorrow, Monday Dec 27th, 9am, for avalanche mitigation work along Vail Pass, from mile marker 178 to mile marker 190. Both directions.

This will make a few people miss their flights back to bumfuck I'm certain.
Guess it’ll be a good time to hit up the mountain before the deluge.
Someone's killer RV and import van combo didn't make it home for Xmas.

After driving for 2 weeks in the NYC/CT/MA area, I’ll add this bitch about the clusterfuck that is driving here: the infrastructure is about 100x worse than Colorado’s, people here camp in the left lane too, people stare at their phones constantly (and swerve all around), people weave in and out of traffic like a fucking video game and love to pull the guillotine move when passing and cutting in front of you, turn signals are very optional, exiting from the left lane to the off ramp in one move is normal, as is entering the highway, ignoring the solid line and gunning it across 3 lanes of traffic to the left lane. One positive: trucks aren’t allowed in the left lane.
2 weeks? How many times did you get honked at in that time?
The lane weave is a talent people in Colorado don't understand. Doing it in the van, with a snowmobile trailer in a blizzard takes skill and fearlessness you gain in more than 2 weeks in hellhole tristate area. I barely have to do it since thanks to all the red and out of state plates I just stick to the right lane and barely do anything to get ahead.
That worked out well.

Yup… took 2 hours to go the 40 miles on the Mass Pike from 128 to Worcester while passing through a couple tuesdays ago early afternoon. Brought back too many memories.
Between traffic, grey skies and sunset at 4P, don’t miss it for a second.
