I heard stories of axle deep moon dust on the Eagle-Thomasville road and stuck Ferrari's. There was a period were Amazon Prime trucks were gutting stuck or rolling on Cottonwood Pass on a daily basis until that was eventually closed. Even after Google was updated to show all routes out of the RFV closed and every VMS board starting at the state line, and some out of state, messaging the detours, there were still Amazon Prime trucks showing up in Glenwood saying "I HAVE TO GO EAST" lol. For some reason Amazon Prime trucks seemed to be the worst offenders.

Eventually state patrol set up a mandatory CMV checkpoint at Tibbet's (Near New Castle) verifying the CMV's bill's of lading had local destinations. Some CMV's tried to blow by the checkpoints without stopping and had to be chased by CSP.

Yeah - and when it routes folks over Cottonwood Pass when Glenwood is closed for whatever other reason...

Though that detour over Crooked Creek was an all-time winner.

Looks like a fun road on the map. Is it dirt or paved? Sketchy?

Dirt with a few switch backs. Mountain bikers used to shuttle lap on it in the summer until they got in fights with a land owner and got the trail closed.

It's a pretty decent dirt road. I would rate it a 2 on a scale of 10 WRT sketch.

Slated for re-opening this summer, though... I think?

So the North Yungas Road would be like what? An 11?
The older I get, the faster I was.

I don't know why you'd even bother with that road since there's Hwy 3 right there...

Yeah, not a sketchy road, but pretty.

The problem wasn't the road, per se. But down in Idaho Springs, you get to a stop sign. And google clearly had no camera on that stop sign or the road as it led to the stop sign. So it assumed that traffic was flowing at speed limit to that point. When instead, it backed up for like 20 minutes as cars waited at the stop sign to make a left turn to get back to 70. Good times.

I mean... what about when Google redirects everyone over North Yungas? Surely Hwy 3 shuts down occasionally for random and insignificant reasons. All highways do, right guys? Right?

Wait, Google gets its traffic info from cameras on stop signs? They must not have cameras on cottonwood pass either

I think google gets its info from a variety of sources, but I assume one of them is cameras or other traffic monitoring devices, and if none exist, it has no way of knowing that traffic isn't moving.

Note, I am neither a traffic engineer nor a dentist and am merely applying logic supported by personal observations.

I always thought the traffic info came from all of our Google overlord tracking devices that are with us 24hrs a day 365 days a year

    perhaps.

All I know is that I was on a road that showed on my maps as "blue" and yet I was in a standstill, taking something like 30 minutes to move a mile or so.

Maybe there was no cell service for google to track us? I don't know, all I know is that the "faster" route was actually 20 minutes slower. But much prettier.

Yeah... I think that at *this* point in history, once Google starts to propose a "faster route" it's very likely the new route is already buggered.

You're realizing this just now? You're awfully slow on the uptake, there, FF. NTTAWWT.

I've always said that Denver isn't in the East, but you can see it clearly from there.

Then again, I've been here for 6 months and haven't made it further east than Norrie.

It's a Midwestern town that's somewhat near the foothills...

That's a common and pithy thing to say, and there are some similarities for sure. But no midwestern town/metro area has millions who recreate in the mountains and foothills on a regular basis, and like it or not, that makes Denver definitely not a midwestern town.

Ah, I see we're at the "Denver sucks" part of the I-70 bitch cycle. This prompts us city slickers to defend our trash heap of a metropolis. I believe we move to "Summit is West Denver" right after. Someone really needs to keep track of this shit.

Draw a 60 mile circle around downtown Denver and look at some of the stunning places in that bubble. I don't need to name 'em, because if you've seen them, you know. Midwest or East town? Get outta here...
