You know now in Europe they've got all these trains that go to all these ski areas from the large metro areas. Most people drive.

The simplest balm to I-70 would be if all the morons driving it would learn to drive a multi lane road. On all the three lane sections its amazing to me how everyone is lingering in the left two lanes going 5-10 mph below the speed limit.
Travel in the right-most lane and use the other lanes to pass as needed.
Half of the traffic jams solved.

Today I had a smile the whole way as I went up and back without any traffic or construction delays. Hoping for a quiet few weeks before the next rush on MLK day.
Glad your drive went so well. Mine, on the other hand, was hell. It was so windy I could hardly eat the AM Crunchwrap I picked up at the new Downieville Taco Bell. I was almost to Silver Plume before I could finish it. If this keeps up I'm going to have start skiing on weekends again. Much easier to eat when you're not moving.![]()

The police are there to make sure you don't drive too fast, instead of enforcing left-lane-passing-only laws.
The police are there to make sure everyone drives at a speed slow enough for crappy vehicles instead of enforcing snowtire + AWD/4WD restrictions.
And so we'll sit in traffic, endure closures, and pay billions in taxes to have constant construction delays to "improve" our "insufficient" roads.
It is a very American problem. In Europe, they pull over the left lane drivers, have a snow tire + AWD law, have RORO trains, and way more tunnels. (They also have infinitely more ski hills)

Saturday night traffic was bad with the volume, but more about the falling snow, I stayed in Silverthorn so I could wake up late and make it to the Luv early. Shralped pow all day Sunday and had a 1.15 hour drive back. About a 15min extra drive because it was sunday. New tunnels at Idaho Springs are great.
Terje was right.

I've noticed that there are a taco bells popping up next to weed stores, or weed stores poping up next to taco bells downieville frisco................ at least you weren't trying to eat a donut and drink coffee too the coffee is the worst part without one of those fancy new cars with a cup holder
Aspen was interesting while I was there. Huge volume on transit going up valley because of shitty parking and a helluva line to get into town.
The whole thing doesn't need an HOV lane, maybe 25 miles, and in Aspen they just used a slightly wider than normal shoulder, which is probably already there on i70 of snow lowers were used to get down to the guardrails instead of plows.
I have to imagine the conversations amongst the CDOT "solutions committee" are probably similar to the arguing in this thread...
In this case the weed store was there first, unless you consider the Burger King which was there before the Taco Bell. I know the guy who owned the BK (a dentist!!!) he told me he couldn't make money there with BK's pricing structure, maybe he should have opened a weed shop.

Like I said, call your congressman. Explain that the future viability of Colorado relies on a smooth, speedy commute for those going to and from the i70 resorts. Emphasize that it is so important that it should take precedent over inter and intra state commerce. Given the choice, it is a no brainer that getting home from Vail in 2.5hrs. should take priority over gas at the pumps, food on the shelves and beer in the cooler.Banning semi's during the peak flow hours would really help.
FTR, I sent a quick email over to RTD to see if they had even considered express lines to Summit/Eagle county, this is the response:
The District will only cover those areas which have been approved by the Colorado legislature.
^^^Call your Congressman. Explain that reducing ski traffic is so important that a portion of all sales tax collected in the metro should be used to create a solution. Remember, the best tax is one paid by someone else. You guys are all for higher taxes right?
The counties of Denver, Boulder, Broomfield (except certain areas immediately adjacent
to I-25 and Highway 7 interchange), Jefferson, Adams (west of Box Elder Creek),
Arapahoe (south of I-70 west of Picadilly Rd. to Jewell, then west of Gun Club Rd. to
Quincy, then generally west of Monaghan Rd. including Arapahoe Park and Aurora
Reservoir), and Douglas (northern portion plus Highlands Ranch and parts of Castle
Rock), and parts of Weld County that have been annexed by the City of Longmont and
the Town of Erie since 1994. In Douglas County, RTD’s boundaries include all of
annexed Lone Tree and, as of January 1, 2004, include the City of Lone Tree. As of April
1, 2004, RTD’s boundaries also include the Acres Green area and the Park Meadows
Mall within its boundaries, therefore, retailers at Park Meadows Mall must collect the
1% RTD tax.
Hey, Lemon Boy told me he takes the light rail to work twice a week so yeah...it works.
Yeah, that certainly would help. Especially with inclement weather.
But when people queue up in the left lane when there are lanes to the right open ahead its just wasting capacity.
The other day at the twin tunnels going east traffic flowing at 50 mph where the new 3rd lane appears. NO ONE is in the right lane. Cdot spent a hundred million plus to create a third lanes and no one uses it? I got into the right lane and passed at least 30 cars over the next couple miles going 55-60 and another 30 going up Floyd Hill at 65, only getting into the middle lane once to pass a single semi. I wasn't even really speeding, it was just that clowns were unnecessarily clogging the left lanes.
If that's what's happening with dry roads, I'm sure that it's even worse with precipitation.
The right lane IS the de facto passing lane in CO.
People get in the left lane, set their cruise to 60mph, cease looking at their mirrors, and disengage their brains.
CSP does not care.
When I drive home from the city, I get in the right late just after the 470 exit and stay there most of the way to Floyd. Only have to get in the middle lane for semis and RVs.
What amuses me is when passing some people, they flash you as though you were at fault for their inattention and failing to clear the lane.
Which brings a whole other topic. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU FLASH YOUR BRIGHTS AT SOMEONE?
IN EUROPE: "They have politely reminded me of my civic duty to obey the laws of the road and I will promptly move over! Gee, I sure am sorry for not paying attention."
IN USA: "THAT COCKSUCKER HAS CHALLENGED MY MANHOOD WITH HIS LIGHTS! NOW I'M GOING TO SLAM ON MY BRAKES AND CUT THEM OFF! HAHAHHAHAH! THIS IS MY ROAD MOTHERFUCKER! EAT PAIN, DEATH AND BRAKE LIGHTS! FUCK YOU! YOU ARE NEVER GETTING PAST ME EVEN IF IT MEANS ME DRIVING 5MPH IN SEMIS BLIND SPOT! I'M PAYING ATTENTION NOW!"
I think that should be an Oatmeal cartoon.

Yup, they need a sign on the Idaho Springs on ramp saying do not merge. Coming back last week there were no less than six cars trying to merge into the middle lane at near 25mph for no reason. I let them all in the conga line and jumped over to the right, sayonara morons.
None of these folks consider how their driving affects traffic flow.
Summit, you nailed it there. It's a f'in disgrace. Even my elderly parents (upstate NY residents) out for a holiday visit remarked about all the left lane/sub-speed limit/speed matched camping here in Colorado.
Twin-tunnel right 3rd lane...WIDE THE F$CK OPEN!!! And you guys think these asshats are gonna be able to maneuver their vehicles onto train carriers without ripping off mirrors & undercarriage/fender benders? They'll f8ck that sh*t up like a snake in a lawnmower, tack on more delays.
Fed up with CHP not enforcing it.
Looking to install LED display board on the 4Runner: CO STATE LAW 42-4-1013: Keep right except to pass. Thanks! ... and will light 'er up whilst passing every offender. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZTvn2JVs4A
Wife thinks I need to be more zen. She's outta her f'in mind...
On a side note.
Anyone ever experience a slow but steadily moving back-up (~20-25 mph) in weather going down Berthoud back to I-70 and some fuck is trying to pass the single line of cars that stretches all the way until the bottom of the pass? Almost passing around the blind corners and definitely over the double yellow line and then cutting in causing people to brake for their selfish asses? Saw two douches do that last Saturday. One of them made it a full half dozen or so cars ahead only to stop in Empire at the Hard Rock Cafe.
Drivers on 93 between Golden and Lyons, and especially Boulder to Lyons, are crazy. Have seen near head-on crashes often and I think there was one the other night?
