Volume certainly is a big part of it, but lack of skill makes things much worse and compounds the problem of volume. With more skilled drivers, i70 could move more smoothly even with higher volume. Lack of skill, awareness and proper equipment is why i70 closes every time we get just a couple of inches. Free winter driving classes likely would be a lot less expensive than a new tunnel bore too.

People get taught a lot of things in life that they still fuck up and no matter how much education you try to give, these folks will still be mixed in with thousands of people from Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, California, etc. who didn't take your class, have shitty 2wd cars with bald tires, and drive 45 in the left lane.

Really, most of the accidents that I've seen over my 25 years of driving I70 have been caused by people driving like assholes for no good reason other than they are in a hurry to get wherever they are headed a few minutes before all the other thousands of people on the highway.

I don't believe this weekend had too many accidents, and the roads were pretty dry. However it was, and usually is, one of the worst weekends for traffic of the season because of a few factors which contribute to volume. Xgames, snow sculptures, no football, snow in forecast, etc.

A behavior I've seen with increasing frequency is the unjustified pissed off driver. I'm in the left or right lane (which ever happens to be going faster) passing traffic in the other lane. Someone in the slower lane pulls in front of me to presumable pass. Fine, whatever, not unexpected. I give them space to do their thing. After we clear traffic and there isn't any immediately ahead in either lane, I go into the other lane to get around that person. They blow their horn and flip me off. It seems to happen more while I'm driving my 4-Runner than my Subaru. I guess the 4-Runner is more sinister looking. Either way, I guess I somehow interfered with their life by being behind them. They feel a need to police the road to a rule of their personal judgement. sad

Another frequent occurrence: I'm in the left lane, with say five other cars in shitty snowy conditions. We are all slowly passing a semi. Agro dude trys to pass everyone in the right lane, cuts us off changing to the left lane, and is still stuck behind like 3 of the other cars, still slowly passing a semi. Really dude? You had to cut someone off by inches, force your way in, on shitty roads, just to gain two spots in the line of traffic? Great.

This happened to me on one of my many trips over Vail pass this winter. Funny thing, after we get over the pass and weather is sunny w/ dry roads and less traffic, the guy is driving 65 all mellow like and I catch up to him without even trying.

Weird thing is, they are usually driving a Grand Cherokee. What's up with that?

Yup Cherokee seems to be a common choice for agro drivers. Guess i'd be pissed off if i had to drive one!

Got to be sure to get it correct so it's fixed for ya. Not Cherokees. Grand ones.

Saw the annual (maybe bi-annual?) burnt out semi trailer sitting on the shoulder EB by Georgetown this afternoon. EPIC.

Does Loveland Pass automatically close every time it snows these days?

I just looked on the web cams, and you can see the pavement... yet the road is closed.

I think CDOT does it out of spite for their lack of funding.

It's because the slopes are having wet point releases from sun melt

Pretty sad. Is it clear at the top too?

I can’t imagine driving through that typical Saturday traffic through Idaho Springs, only to get to the tunnel and have to go around (and probably wait for Hazmat trucks as well). And then park down by Keystone and bus up.

Actually given the apparent traffic jam in Dillon I bet Basin is full and they are trying to avoid a jam backwards up the pass.

It's been closed since 7:30 this morning. And yeah, it's still closed with semi-clear skies and asphalt showing (according to the web cams). CDOT, get your shit together, that's just fucking sad.

Basin was probably full at 7:30 this morning.
    Only partly kidding.

Black ice would be my guess.
Edit: nah congestion seems just as if not more likely. Keeping hazmat tankers out of the cluster.

It's pretty common, like every other week somewhere between vail and denver

it was still there saturday night, some one is scratching their head trying to figure out how to get it into a dumpster and what time of day to shut the highway down to do it

Pulled into the lower lot at ABasin at 8:10...but it filled quickly behind us. All parking did fill up and they were parking people down off Hwy 6 and shuttling them up......the norm on Saturdays now.

How long will CDOT tolerate using Hwy 6 pulloffs as "shuttle parking" for the basin?

Hopefully not long and those people will go to Breck or Keystone. All that traffic and parking BS just to ski a couple of laps in Molly Holly Bowl.

Today was a new one for me - heading back to Denver on Loveland Pass, about 200 yards past the usual funnel point for most people skiing the pass. I see a couple mouth breathers skiing the outside shoulder of highway 6 to try and head back to LL complete with rental gear. Almost saw one catch an edge and get blasted by a Jeep. Based on their day tickets flapping in the wind I assume they ducked out at the top of LL and dropped in somewhere skiers left of idiots cornice. Combined with rental everything and 0 avy gear I have to assume they totally knew what they were doing

    no I70 complaints today?
must be a monday everyone is tucked away in thier office
70 was a total shit show incase you were wondering, people were stuck in silverthone thanks to everyone getting sent off the highway for closures, since people can't get their head out of their ass and they just sit waiting for it to open back up in the middle of the road no one else can get from point a to b
