Even skiing in Summit Co, the heart of the shitshow™, this weekend was not that crowded at all. Sometimes you just have to go to the right place.

And let's not forget that Ouray built an Ice PARK to draw in climbers to spend money in the town. It is supposed to be busy. You want not busy, don't go to a park.

In addition, it is getting warmer here. It has rained in December in 4 of the past 5 years in Ouray and the ice park is in serious danger of no longer being viable because of warming temps. What used to be a 3 month ice season down there is now a 4-6 week ice season. In the next decade it may be too warm.

Colorado has turned into a massive shit show in the last 5 years. It is absolutely not worth moving here.
so true. thanks for keeping the gapers out

"An overturned semi has I-70 at mile point 209 (four miles East of Silverthorne) closed in both the westbound and eastbound direction. The semi was traveling in the WB lane and missed the runaway truck ramp, the load it was carrying of large pipe traveled into the EB lanes. Several vehicles were hit by the pipe but no injuries are reported at this time. CDOT, local law enforcement and EMS are on scene.

This looks to be a lengthy closure. The Alternate Route is US 6 Loveland Pass. The closure WB is at the Loveland Exit and the EB closure is at Silverthorne(mile point 205). No ETO at this time. Please check back here or on www.COTRIP.org for updates."

    What the fuck.

Watching the idiots going up towards LP which had already been under traction law and seeing people spinning out at the Dillon and Keystone lights, I said "well LP won't stay open for long..." and about 5 minutes later LP closed. Also Berthoud is closed for a multicar wreck.

Damn! I told him to do that at 7:30 AM not PM. Why can't this kind of shit happen to block MFers from getting here for about 2 hrs from lifts opening on a pow day?

Imagine if you are having chest pain and the ambulance needs to take you to Denver... time is life!

Wow, I was hoping to go uphill from Denver tomorrow morning but its looking like really bad timing now as there's a good deal of agreement that we'll see heavy snowfall from like 6am to noon. Might get stuck up there.

Not risking it, going up tonight when the window looks ok. The clueless i70 riff-raff tends to shy away from late night mid-wk snow. Cruiser just got fresh Nokian Hakka LT2 315's, needs a proper storm feeding.

yeah, that's the way to do it if you can. Outback needs a storm feeding too, I got some Blizzaks on her 2 weeks ago and since then, we've only managed to get in days when it was dry.

60 minutes from Frisco to the tunnel yesterday afternoon. On a Wednesday! Spin outs all the way up the hill. Some idiot in a mini van was bouncing in between 2 lanes with his wheels turned to the right flooring it. Then some tandem was really struggling to get going again. Felt bad for that guy (he was chained). 2.5 hours from Copper to Lakewood/6. FML

Will someone please learn me why everyone still chooses to drive I70 in this shit-show? I know I know, people want to go skiing, and everyone needs a banger for their Instagram feed, but fuck me the drive is brutal 100% of the time when it snows for anyone "working" a 9 to 5.

Clearly...but in all seriousness, how do so many people STILL choose to make that drive at 7am on a Saturday?

Because they are fucking stupid and that is just what they do. Some of them have probably been doing it for generations. Their grand daddy used to get stuck on Hwy6 and bitch about it, then their daddy used to get stuck driving his station wagon with wood grained side panels, now they get to get to it. I blame it on a weak gene pool and the effects of nuclear fallout from Rocky Flats.

Saw a lot of Troopers giving tickets to chainless semis and helping those stuck in the snow. Big thanks to them

So, they closed Berthoud today. No big deal as it was avy related. Traffic was going ungodly slow, and to add insult to injury there was a Toyota Camry 2wd w/ no chains on who couldn't make it up one of Berthoued's inclines. So, it is stuck in the middle of the road until a truck decided to tow it up. Fuck this guy. Thursday pow day Denver to Winter Park = 3 hours 20 minutes. Every lot was full and lines at the lift. Time to move to Salt Lake.

Powder day with the boys @ Vail; #blessed #anotherdayintheoffice #mylifeisyourvacation

I've pretty much resigned to the fact that unless you want lift served deep powder only at Eldora or WP, go up the night before. Get a hotel. Stay with a friend. Sleep in a camper. Anything but waking up at dark thirty, going toe to toe with 2000 bald tires / 2WD shitboxes and stressing yourself out! When you're not in the shitshow, the drive is a non issue.

On Tuesday I read the snow report in bed at 6:45am then decided to go skiing. After making breakfast for my wife, reading the paper, shoveling and walking the dogs I proceeded towards the top of Little Cottonwood at 8:30am, normally about a 35min drive. I hit some traffic that ended up being stop-light related - the La Caille light is timed to get northbound commuters on Wasatch Blvd to work in the morning, southbound traffic can get a little clogged there. After that it was smooth sailing into the Goldminer's parking lot for about 50min from driveway to liftline.
I skied 5 of the better laps I've had in the past 19 years, 19" of snow had been falling vertically for the past 24 hours. After the Bus Run on the 5th lap I was conflicted, because I felt like I should start working instead of extended-play hooky following a long weekend.... but that last run was so fucking good. I checked my email at the car - nothing pressing - and went to get another Bus Run, but at the top of Wildcat I discovered the holiest of hole Keyhole gates had just opened, so I had to partake. It was a top 5 all-time run. Skied right up to a bus, hopped on and got dropped off 80ft from my car, changed and drove down the canyon, doing actual work by noon.

I was glad that some asshole who chose to race through the chain-up area in the right-lane got pulled over and ticketed. What a fucktard. He thought he was going to be the shit and pass everyone in the right lane, but at the expense of blowing past a cop and a bunch of helpless truckers with their ass cracks up in the air.

Perhaps I'm out to lunch and it's par for the course, but today around 1pm, spot a semi going up EB i70 eisenhower with just chains on the rear trailer wheels. Nothing else... def no Turing in that cab. Few miles up pass, another jackass semi spun out, zero chains. Sometimes feel like it needs to be $10k for the imbecile crowd to double think it. Decent pair of single axle/double drive wheel semi chains go for ~$500. 1.5 days of gas $. The overhead excuse just doesn't compute.

With that said, pretty easy up last night, and down this aft. Abasin was bonkers, esp when the ~11am rope drop for 2nd half of Montezuma.

What about the times you get stopped in the canyon (pick one) for hours at a time with nowhere to go? Because that happens A LOT too.

But yeah, obviously the skiing and access is way better in SLC.
