Whose Floating the Smith this summer?

Who was lucky enough to pull a permit? Private floaters should be notified anytime now. Heard there was a record number of applicants this year.

I will be on the river from early June to mid July, water permitting. Snowpack in Smith drainage is looking good, about 150% currently and building. Should make for a decent float season. Kind of depends on how the snow comes off the mountains. Hopefully gradually!

Wish I put in but skipped it this year. Should have some good flows! Longer than normal runoff but...

Damn that's a long time on the Smith! Guiding?

    All three attempts skunked.

If anyone pulled from the colorado area and has an opening I'd love to join in. Happy to drive a sprinter van and trailer up with gear and 2 to 3 boats.

My virgin 14ft fishing raft would love to see the smith this summer.

Schwerty, yep, guiding. I have pulled a 4-6 week Smith tour for the past 12 seasons. I always look forward to the season, always enjoy my time there and am always ready to be done by the end!

Kneedropper, good luck on hitching a ride on someones permit. Your 14 footer would be perfect. It is a truly awesome trip!

Wish I would have put in this year too. We pulled last year but couldn't float because if the low flows. With the snow pack this year it should be a great season.

Got it. Your dad is a good dude. He just won a night or two at Healing Waters Lodge at that last meeting. Very cool. I think he said he was going to take you with him!
Actually pinpointing when that premium window happens each year on the Smith is the million dollar question. So many variables with the freestone rivers. You guys just need to pull a permit and go. I am sure you would be able to entertain yourselves! Personally I would rather have high off colored water than low, clear warm water. It fishes great with big junk when it is off color.
Maybe we will see you at the water festival in a couple weeks.

no luck on the prime time ones, but I did hit on September 28. Unlikely there is enough water then, but I'll be checking on it.

Mr. Mike, you never know. 2011 you could have floated all summer. Those fall dates can be incredible from what I hear. As long as the flow is 160 cfs at Camp Baker, you are good to go.

Forgot to put in this year. I know it's not an option for most, but if you have a flexible schedule calling up and getting on cancelled permits can be a good way to go. We did this a couple years ago and put in on sat of memorial day weekend. We launched with only one other boat that day. I guess the 3 day blizzard and low temps might have had something to do with it. Fishing was understandably slow but we managed some fish and had our pick of pretty much any campsites. Water could be flowing good later this year with almost everything at least 110% snowpack. Hope to make it back up that way soon

I got skunked for the fifth year in a row, but three of our shop guys pulled a date.
We are going on two of the three floats- launching 5/4 and 5/26. The date we aren't using is 4/27.

Has anyone ever had any luck with the super permit?

Did not get him any numbers. Didn't know he wanted any. As far as getting on this year, you should be able to walk on late April and most of May pretty easily. People walk on all summer. Basically if someone does not show up for their launch, it is made available to the next person in line. Feel free to PM me your number and I will tell you what I know about the process.

Super Permit lets you choose your launch date.

I have floated the Smith twice. First time was late June, great weather and great fishing. Second time was early May, snowed every day but fishing was still great.
