Snowboarder rescued from treewell after slide near Sun Valley

A 50-year-old snowboarder was injured after being partially buried by an avalanche Thursday while riding out-of-bounds in the Sun Valley area. The report indicates he was inside a tree well when rescuers reached him.

Not sure why that guy who was a local was out there with all of Warm Springs BC letting loose. I hope he is ticketed.

The 50-year-old was taken by ambulance to the nearby St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center. The sheriff says he suffered facial lacerations, and possible femur, cervical, pelvic and clavicle injuries.
“Given the seriousness of the avalanche conditions, we were extremely fortunate to have a successful outcome," said Blaine County Sheriff Gene Ramsey. "It was a very dangerous situation for our first responders. The backcountry is extremely unstable and will remain so at least through the weekend. We strongly encourage people to stay out of avalanche areas.”

Depends on the conditions. I wasn't there that day. It's an access the BC through certain gates policy. The bitch of it is that the road that comes out this drainage had been closed because a big slide went through it and it was all over the news to stay out of that area. The reports have been pegging considerable avalanche danger with crazy weather on top of it. I can't speculate whether the boundaries were closed or not but nobody should have been going out that day.

The bitch of it is another guy died four days later about 40 miles north in a remote triggered slide.

SV has gates? Moved away before last season and 3 years ago there was some discussion with the patrollers about gates, but I thought that everybody decided not to go with it. Just curious, I'll be over before there before the end of the season. Was there at Christmas, no need to look for gates at that time. Cross was cool.

    No gates, open boundary.

Witnesses say a snowboarder triggered this on Sunday, a few hundred yards up the rope line from the one that caught Hattula 3 days before. He wasn't caught, and hiked back up and in bounds.

I thought there were gates for awhile. I stand corrected.
