    Quit boring job?!

Okay - right now I am stuck in a very boring but pretty well paying job. I also work market hours(7 to 5, m-f) and I am bored out of my frigging mind. I have the opportunity to waitress at a place this summer where you are pretty much guaranteed to make bank. Also, hoping to finally get a business that my roommate and I have wanted to start for a while off the ground - The problem is that I am scared shitless......

    Anyone done anything like this.......

I don't get it. You have the opportunity to make bank waitressing, and you're scared? Bank, in relation to your current job? Or bank in terms of you'll be able to at least pay your bills and have a bit o money on the side? If you're guaranteed to make "bank" waitressing, and are bored at your current job, then just quit!

However, is your current job your future career, or at least something that will lead up to it? If so, I'd reconsider and just find a job doing something semi-similar in a different company. But this whole business-thing, just go for that. A friend of mine and I are always discussing starting a catering business, but I've decided to stick with the career thing - but quit my current job and move to Tahoe. Less pay, more snow. You do the math!!

In November of 2003 I packed my shit in my truck, walked out of a job doing ACAD design (not bad for a 21 y/o with no college) and moved to Mammoth with about $700 to my name and no where to work or live. Drove straight into the resort and said I wanted a job. Filled out an app and spent the night in a hotel. The next day got a call, interviewed, got a job, told them I needed housing and they gave it to me (that night my girlfriend of a year back in so cal dumped me, I wonder why). I started two days later. End of April came, I got laid off and hadn't looked for a job. Went to the temp agency and said I need work, here's what I can do, now I'm leaving to go on a road trip to New York, see you at the end of May, have work for me. Realized I needed to move out of housing since I didn't work for the mountain any more and ran into a buddy that day who needed a roomie, I said yes, moved my shit in that afternoon, gave him security and first month rent and said see ya in a month. Me and a buddy hopped in his car the next day and left for NY armed with $200 cash and a credit card. A few days before I got back to town I called the temp agency and said do you have work, she said give me a few days. I got back, sat on my ass for one day and she called with a job at the cable company that latsted all summer till this winter and they actually wanted to keep me a permanant employee but I wanted ski time and not a 9-5 in the winter. This year I planned my jobs a lil more carefully. Its scary but its awesome at the same time. Just remember that it will eventually work out and keep a positive attitude!!!! I've never regreted any of it or looked back and would do it all again in an instant. It was by far the best and most exciting year of my life.

Thanks - I think what scares me is the fact that I am going from having a steady paycheck to having no idea what I will be bringing home. Also, "good jobs" can be tough to find in Jackson and I have one in what I thought was the field I wanted to be in and I am scared to give that up. However, starting to realize that is is not the career I want.....Also, I would be happy to make less and be able to enjoy this area a lot more.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I'm in your same exact position, except that I've been pining to live in Jackson for years. But, as you said, good jobs are hard to come by up there. I came close, really close to landing one this December. Oh well-I'm still a puss.

that stinks. Where are you living now? Are you still trying to move here? I had a job lined up before I moved here and it got me through my first year here but the longer I live here, the more I realize that it really is all about who you know in this town - most of the good jobs don't even get advertised - Obviously, I don't know your situation but if you are serious about wanting to live here, I would just move here, get a job serving or whatever and start meeting as many people and as many contacts as you can and it might take awhile but you will definitely get that good job. That is just my 2 cents - Hey you can have my job!

    Quit now!

Seriously. You're a youngster andif you don't have big overhead and baggage(spouse, kids, cars, boats, planes) you're wasting your time - and time is one of those things you never get back. Take your shot now, and keep taking 'em. Now don't piss me off - go quit.

I definitely won't be pissing you off - it's a done deal and I am going to have a blast this summer. Thanks for all the advice and setting me straight.
