UDOT will be sighting in the Big Cottonwood Howitzer tomorrow (11/27/13) at 0830. The South side Big Cottonwood Canyon will be closed from Broads Fork to Stairs Gulch from midnight tonight through 0930 tomorrow. There will be a intermittent road closure for the shoot beginning at 0825. Shouldn't delay traffic too much if your heading up canyon at that time.

If your following us for this kind of info on twitter @UDOTavy; we are having troubles at this time, hope to get it fixed soon.

    Sorry

Thanks Mr. Skifishbum for thinking of Craig's family, and spreading the word about the donation page.
So, on Wednesday we had a fly in the ointment with our planned sight in, we had a rig in the s-turn parking lot, so we didn't shoot. It wasn't anyone's fault, but we need to try again.
We will be sighting in artillery in Stairs Gulch tomorrow, Friday the 29th at 8:30. The Backcountry on the South side of Big Cottonwood Canyon will be closed from Broads Fk to Stairs Gulch from midnight tonight until 9:00 am tomorrow.
Hope this doesn't mess up anyone's Stairs Gulch ski tour....again.
    Thanks for understanding.
If your heading up BCC in the morning, the delays to the road will be minimal and short lived.

    Happy Thanksgiving,

    Brad D.

powfiend if you have a friend with you, or can find one in the parking lot, I've got 2-for-1 coupons for the bird. Free if you want them. Expire 12-25 and I'd hate to let them expire in my drawer - I have a pass.

Anyone in Sandy/ Cottonwood Heights need a roommate? Will be here until mid April. Thought I'd see if any mags are looking for one before I head over to Craigslist.

Up grizzly skied sw facing gullies in the sun. Damn cold down low in the shade. No formal pits dug but a bunch of hand pits on the the way up showed some small thin soft slabs up high from yesterdays wind on top of the storm snow but didn't have much umph. There was no snow there a week ago so ground facets weren't a big concern. Jumped on some rolls and convexities nothing moved. Damn fine turns were had by all no butt wiggles sighted. Didn't notice it on the way up canyon but when we got back to the truck lookers r side of Cardiff slid. From the end of the road it looked like it broke off of or slid over some tracks....

Sun dogs sure were sure stellar yesterday

a balmy 8 at the crack o noon patrol
s e skied surprisingly well pretty stout crust under new snow with decnt bonding at that interface.
n facin sheltered not so much not sure if them 6"ers was sluff or avvies seems reporting sluffs is en vouge these days
observed this class is being offered again
    http://continue.utah.edu/noncredit/c...now__avalanche
    great class great instructors
bout 50 times the actual on snow field/pit work as taking avvy 1 and 2. no magic certification piece of paper though.
I'd consider this one but lack current certified pre requisites
    http://continue.utah.edu/noncredit/c...ues_and_theory
any one ever take this or have any input on the instructor?

dear cornice stompin avvy creating DICKS
please refrain from creating multiple possible repeating slide paths on the terrain a lot of people
would like to see potentially become more stable through increased snowpack depth and bonding.

skied e bowl def not hero snow
instabilties noted in the forms of collapsing and cracking and sensitive wind drifts

Got out yesterday, instabilities noted in high N facing terrain that had been wind loaded. Failing on stout crust formed by easterly wind event. Good turns on sheltered lower angle terrain. South facing exit was a bit interesting.

    Another Sun Dog for ya.

Let the arm chair quarterbacking begin!

The question is was this a suicide attempt? Glad everyones alright, could've ended much worse.

This slope seems to go every year, I remember a few years back Kobernik reported a slide and had to dispatch Alta patrol with tracks leading in...not a good place to be.

    screw it i'll start.
    1. fresh avalanche RIGHT next to it (class 1 data)
    2. partner with no gear?
    3. that is probably the most obvious terrain trap in the Wasatch and has been brought up in every avy class I took and now help teach (so its not like its an unknown spot).

at some point its just natural selection...

    1. doubtful any of the party could have seen that slope
    2. i'd hope that one of the parts of calling myself a professional photographer would be carrying the basic rescue gear
    3. but, dude, do you know how many cover shots that face has produced?
