Dynalook Plate with Pivot binders-ski performance?

I bought a pair of Look Pivot 18 this summer. Will only run them at 8 or 9, but I wanted that binding and Look doesn't seem to sell the 15. Hell they could put 12 springs in there and I would be fine. Anyways I don't need someone telling me I don't need an 18 binding. I bought the binding I wanted for benefits I perceived unrelated to DIN #.

I plan to mount the bindings on a pair of Moment Jaguar Sharks. I have a pair of skins that could work with these skis and I am thinking about setting them up to run radicals on the rare occasion that would be a better touring ski than the others I have. Bought a pair of Dynalooks to make the switch easy.

What is bothering me is that one of the things I put in the pro column for the Pivot bindings is their short mounting footprint. Using the Dynalook plate makes for a large mounting footprint and not a compact one. Was the small footprint of the Pivots a real advantage?

I could go with inserts, but the plate is so easy.

that certainly was/is one of the benefits of the FKS.
I just measured an FKS mount footprint (310BSL) @ ~29cm.
    And a SollyFit (not a DynaLook) for a 302BSL @ ~40cm.
    that's a big difference.

but i think that the main attraction of the FKS is the heel's elasticity and the way in which it rotates on the axis of your tibia/fibula for oooh-so smooth releases.

i haven't skied an FKS on a plate, so i too am interested in opinions.

As a data point, I can't tell the difference on my 192 bibbys/dynalooks which should be very similar to the jag sharks. I like pivots for their bombproof design and the elastic travel which avoids pre-releases pretty effectively.

Theoretically, the dynalooks will stiffen up the skis under your heel. Perhaps this will be a bigger effect on softer or shorter skis.

    Jon,

have you had anyone mount the back plate with only four screws as opposed to 6? I'm not sure how necessary they would be if only running turntables and dynafit heels.

That's a good question Xavier. I looked at cutting the heels down on the plates.

I bought the Jag Sharks in a 182 with the thought that they could be used for touring on big days (again know this will be rare.) If they were a dedicated lift served ski, I would have gone longer.

The theory with the Pivot bindings was the shorter mounting point led to a smaller dead spot in the ski flex and a shorter ski would ski a bit longer with them. There seems to be some logic to this, but I am far from a ski engineer.

Lacking an answer, I will probably just go with inserts.

Given the super-short mount point of Pivot/FKS, I am seriously interested in producing an adapter plate to get from FKS to tech toes. There's no hole conflict in the heel, so you only need a toe adapter. To me, it makes the most sense to just screw the plate into inserts you've put in FKS holes. This way, the FKS is mounted directly to the ski, and the tech toe has a built-in shim (preferably 1 cm). Inserts are easy enough to do, but tech and FKS toes are pretty close together—radical toes might even be overlapping; not sure. Having done a number of DIY mountings and insert installation, I firmly believe that the hard part isn't installing inserts; it's getting everything lined up perfectly. To me, this type of plate makes perfect sense, particularly for those of us who like to shim the tech toes up a bit to alleviate the huge ramp angle of tech binders.

I made one out of HDPE for one pair of skis, and it worked well, but I think a pair from metal would be *perfect.*

jondrums, you interested in this idea at all?

Little surprised by the lack of response. Anyone else like this solution? If so, maybe we can convince Jon to do it with a group buy or something? Given how many people want to use FKS and tech binders, this seems like a winner to me...

I think this idea sounds great. If they get made, I'd buy a couple.

Yes. That is exactly what I want. I think it will be better than current dynalook plates. I could stop by a local machine shop and make one. 7mm aluminum?

Maybe we should produce a drawing?

I was going to do the same sort of thing, only I have the FKS bindings. Long story short I opted out of the plate and can live with it as a dedicated area use rig.

Off width...do you still need a drawing and then could have it machined? I'm interested in doing this for dynafit/look (ag would owe me forever) and I'm interested in doing this for G3 ion/look and maybe even STH. I also sent you a PM.

    Was not reading forum.

No, I decided to have two dedicated setups. Maybe I am wrong.
