Still a lot of low hanging fruit in the Mt. Baker backcountry more than a week after the last storm. Got out for a hike with some good friends for a day then watched my roommate win the LBS for the second time, and he still can't drink beer.

Did some one post pics of their wife in the ullr thread or something last night? I've been waiting a long time for a day like today. Stevens is amazing. I'm sure baker and alpy (oh wait..) are going off as well!
I know there may only be a couple days left in the North Face Steeps contest, but my photo from October that started this thread is currently 10th and only the top five are to be judged. If any of you could take a second, vote for the photo at the link below, and share the link with friends via email or facebook, it could make my year.
They've given out a free heli-skiing trip in every years contest as the grand prize. I'll be done with college in March and ending on a note like that would be an unreal experience and truly the trip of a lifetime.

I can vouch that not only does Cory take some pretty pictures, but he would be the best skier on the mountain if I didn't fuck that up for him. I'd be stoked to see the pictures that came out of a heli trip.
Okay so, I have class tomorrow that I can't skip and class wednesday at 12 that I can't skip.
I was thinking about a little dawn patrol action before class on wednesday. I go to school in Tacoma. Any rec's on somewhere safe to go?

You just got my vote. Great shot!
In the Alpental valley yesterday @ 3:30, SW-facing semi-protected slope @ 3700 ft: ECT2Q3 @ 20cm, ECT10Q3 @ 40cm. Repeats showed similar results. Couldn't get anything on either side of the old rain crust to go. No whumpfing, cracks, etc. Bailed to poach half a lap in-bounds and saw plenty of natural hang-fire going off above cliff bands in-bounds w/ widespread sympathetic tree-bombs. So to answer the question: Spooky.

There was a significant natural cycle early evening
“I have a responsibility to not be intimidated and bullied by low life losers who abuse what little power is granted to them as ski patrollers.”
I'll echo the spookiness of the snow pack today. In the hwy 97 corridor had several "whoomps" and cracks near ridgeline and tree line. Dug several CT and ECTs, which usually resulted in the new snow (~25-35 cm) failing at Ct/ECT 7. No propagation in the ECT. Q1 shear. I stuck to 20-25 degree trees and had no problems with stability and really enjoyable pow skiing.
I heard a huge slide in the Alpental valley this morning ~10:30 while occupying the padded seats. I didn't hear a bomb beforehand and it sounded like it came from across the valley, but sound travels in weird ways up there. Traffic was flowing freely on I-90, which makes me believe it wasn't WSDOT-initiated... anyone else hear/see it? Hoping it was a natural, but jeez did it give me the creeps.

Sweet day at Baker with the 10" heavy, but not wet, goodness.
But holy jeebus! Vibes to the group in the red SUV that sailed of the road after the first hairpin going down this afternoon. Word at the road was three were okay but shaken but 1 more was trapped in the truck with a back injury. When I took a peek down through the hole in the snowbank, there were at least 6 people already down at the vehicle 40 or so yards below. A healthy old fir tree stopped what must have been 10 rolls toward the valley. With the season so light thus far there are no natural gaurdrails up there. I pray that thing had side curtain airbags.
Shitty end to a great day to have to have seen that mess. No one had any idea wtf happened.
Boot top windfucked cream cheese today at Stevens. Fun, but got chunky fast. In more sheltered northerly aspects, very nice snow.
Lots of results from patrol. plenty of windloading in open areas. even some mini slides off the side of the road on the bank, caused by the snowplow.
Moral of the story: The snow is fun, but not worth dying over. Don't be stupid out there.
I didn't see a thread about this.

Anybody know anything? Is everyone accounted for?
Holy shit. Talked to a patroller yesterday who was coming back from wenatchee trees into E and he said that skiing was pretty meh, highly variable, tree bombs setting off slides. This rain isn't going to help either. I doubt it'll make it through the wind slab from yesterday. So yeah, its probably just going to get worse for the next couple days.
