I've always wondered about this, glad to see some confirmation.“micro route finding,” an avalanche safety skill I believe is significantly more important than snow science, and much harder to learn. It is the art of using subtle terrain variations to avoid small, but nonetheless deadly slides.
In the Big T off of Ski Santa Fe, (gladed slackcountry shot) I came across the crest of a deepish drainage and watched a crack propagate from my tips about 50 feet, before the whole side slid to the bottom. This is not terrain that normally slides, but seeing that micro-micro release was eye opening.
