    Runners Knee?

So my last real training run Before Imogen Pass Run this weekend was on Monday. I have been averaging over 50 miles a week since May. Ran a 40 mile race last month and have done numerous training runs of 25+ miles. This run was 12 miles and on the downhill that I was pushing the pace a little I noticed a dull pain under my knee(hard to pinpoint the pain but just under the kneecap towards the outside of the knee). More of an ache not a shooting pain. I slowed a little and felt like it would go away. When the trail flattened the ache got worse until I was unable to run. My knee is not swollen and it does not hurt to walk. Went for a slow run yesterday and it hurt at first but then was ok. Today it was fine on a short hike but did not feel great on the trail when it went downhill. Im not planning on racing because I know a 7 mile downhill with 4 k of drop would certainly be very bad. Trying to figure out whats going on. Going to give it some rest and get on my bike more then running. Any ideas of what it going on. Knee is not sore and no pain to the touch. I assume its some type of tendonitis?
    Thanks

Not sure. It band does not feel stiff. The initial injury was while running downhill but again there was no pop or twisting motion. Went for a light run of 4 miles of flat. Felt ok running but I did not dare go up or down hills or push the pace faster then 10 min miles. Feels a little sore but no pain, no swelling and not tender to the touch.

I'm no doctor and I'm sure it presents differently for some people but I developed it last summer/fall and it was most definitely under or sometimes behind the kneecap.

Mine was fairly mild and the PT had me do a lot of stretching, like everyday for 2 months before I noticed a big difference(foam roller helps), and strength training to fix my hamstring/quad imbalance. What really got rid of it for good was when I got serious about strength training this summer in preparation for hunting season and ski season. When my hamstrings started to catch up with my quads in terms of strength I saw big improvements, to the point that I could forget to stretch for a week or two and not even notice. YMMV

sounds like patellar tendonitis (or tendinotis, not sure if they are the same). can you squat with your knees fully bended or does that hurt? had something similar and it seems to be improving with rest and taking a break from all the stairs i'd been climbing. my chiro thought it might have had to do with lower quad being tight just inside the knee. i got some deep tissue massage but have to say the rest seems to have been the best thing

The instances of runner's knee I've had were characterized by a sharp pain under the knee cap. According to my physio however, runner's knee can express itself very differently in different folks however. On that note, let me offer the following advice which has served me tremendously well. Find a good physio. I was fortunate enough to stumble upon one when I bought a place next door to his. In receiving treatment from him, I realized what truly shitty advice and treatment I had received in the past. Physios from New Zealand and Australia have an excellent reputation. Several physicians have told me that their training is particularly extensive and rigorous.

One more thing worth mentioning, a very common hallmark of runner's knee is that it actually feels better when you are running. Ergo, your situation may not be runner's knee. Either way, you might want to let a Kiwi / Aussie physio sort you out (should one be available). Best of luck to you in your event.

SO I went to the doc yesterday. I figure the local Telluride doctors see more knees then most. He did manipulation tests on my knee and seemed very confident since I had no discomfort that my ligaments and meniscus where fine. He says its chondromalacia (type of runners knee). He did not seem to worried and prescribed pt for the next month. I think my lack of mt biking has caused an imbalance in my muscle causing the issue. Going to tape my knee with kinesio tape(anyone try this?) and get some easy riding in.
    Any experience with this injury
    Thx

Just got back from pt. He does think its IT band related and said my lack of flexibility was impressive. He gave me different stretches and a foam roller. Any suggestions for IT band issues?

Read the thread I had going, starting to feel better(http://www.tetongravity.com/forums/s...Worked-for-You). There is a lot of information in there. How's your glute strength? The things that have seemed to help me the most are isometric holds of the clamshell exercise with a band around my knees, stretching, and foam rolling. I also have been doing some core work, side planks and deadlifts which seem to help as well. My hamstrings are relatively weak compared to my quads, so I've been working on that muscle group as well.

You want to progress slowly and make sure the exercises/stretching aren't causing pain. I find that my TFL's are tight so I stretch them using this pose(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRb3W-94QLA). Your PT should be able to assess you to tell you what's strong what's weak and give you a good idea of what you should be working on. Depending on the issues you have stretching and foam rolling may not be enough.

I believe my issue was stemming from a misaligned pelvis, everyone is built differently and has different imbalances going on. You just need to find out what those are and work on them, can take some time to get the proper routine going.

I had a "Birmingham Resurfacing" done at the Rothman Institute in Phila. Talk about pain! I thought my skiing, biking days were over. I ballooned up to 252LBS. Through desperate research and talking to EVERYBODY I was directed to a woman who's brother is a physician. At the center of it all I found a group of physicians and scientists that invented a supplement that put me back on track. I can now ski, run, tennis etc WITH NO PAIN WHATSOEVER and I am 63 years old.
If you want more info I'll put you in touch with one of the doctors.
