I'm surrounded by about a million pinion trees and thinking I should be harvesting pine nuts. Anybody have any experience with that?
There's one at the end of the driveway.
Its surprisingly hard to find cones with good ripe nuts. I found a honey hole in Union City. Still a pain in the ass, really hard little shells, we used dykes (pliars) to cut them. Tasty little guys.
Can't comment on the logistics of harvest (it's quite species dependant), but with the introduction of the N.American western conifer cone bug to Europe, the pine nut harvest in places like spain and italy has crashed, so prices might make it viable for you.
