consider donating to SAR's. they are volunteers and usually funded from donations and fundraisers. you never know if it'll be you, your family, or one of your friends next.

Still waiting on a more detailed report. The byline in the KCRA article says he came across a home in "Soda Springs," which to me implies south of the freeway, which doesn't make any sense. Maybe he ended up way west and hit the first home north of the freeway near where 40 crosses 80? That's a long fucking way.

    Glad he's ok.

Best day since last year. On par with best day in any year I've been in Tahoe. good years seem to have more days like this than "bad" years but there are days like this in every year (except the rally bad ones).

Also, maybe resorts should market April ski vacations since that tends to be the best conditions last three years.

Yesterday at Squaw sucked. Snow kept hitting me in the face and I had to keep wiping my goggles off. I knew it was going to be good when driving up 80 and there was snow on the ground in Colfax (2500 feet?).

It was fun to finally ski some light snow on KT for a change, but Granite was fucking awesome. Anyone else see that little kid bomb the cliff near the top right under the chair? Huge applause, you could tell he loved it. Gotta love Squaw. If patrol opens Granite peak today head there first thing.

Best day in over a year, no question.

we have this discussion year in year out. people flock to the resorts in november through christmas when conditions are at best a roll of the dice, but the interest just isn't there in april and may when the base is at it's deepest. these also happen to be the same people that worry so much about getting hurt early season because of low tide.

seems like if the demand could be shifted toward the end of the season the resorts could save buckets of duckets on snowmaking expenses.

Even with marketing I doubt it will ever happen, as the temps rise and the flowers start blooming in the lower elevations, peoples minds reset from snow sports to summer activities.

pretty much puking all day at kirkwood yesterday. keep in mind tahoe is well past the sierra crest and the orographics tend to squeeze out the available moisture before it gets to tahoe

Out by the fire station next to the west bound 80 on/off ramp. Where Hole In The Ground hits the road. A few miles west of where he should've been.

Probably dropped down the wrong (west) side of Andesite from the saddle. Or somehow hooked up with the jeep/snomo road that heads west on the south side of Andesite.

    Glad he's OK.

Edited to add: just saw he was following a creek, which means Lower Castle on the west side of Andesite. It hits the Yuba just NW of where he was found. Good thing it was heading more or less in the right direction (not a guarantee in that area).

Castle Peak/Peter Grubb Hut area is definitely one of the Bermuda Triangles of the Tahoe Backcountry. Easy access and available overnight shelter lead to high use. The seemingly straightforward navigation always seems to go out the window when conditions deteriorate and missing Castle Pass on the way out is easier to do than you would think. Glad everything turned out well.

April Fools Day was SPECTACULAR at the mountain not in the Basin (But Better Than Those In The Basin). Crouds were non existent. If you are out riding today you were left pleanty of goods. Crouds were non existent, tracks were rarely crossed, face shots were had, pow all over the place, in my nose, mouth, ears. EVERYTHING opened. Was Knee Deep, Waist Deep, and Up to my Armpits in a few spots. BLOWER. And to top it off I was paid for it
If you missed it, always can cross your fingers for next year! Best Day in a Long Time!
I'm cool with this, as long as you Kirkwood Bro Brah's stay away from Heavenly when 88 closes- TahoeBc

Yeah, Skeritt Lane is what I was thinking about when I said "Maybe he ended up way west and hit the first home north of the freeway near where 40 crosses 80? That's a long fucking way." Interesting.

bodywhomper, talk to the dude when you get a chance and see what his thinking was and how the whole thing played out.

Ditto. They've handled a lot of these types of rescues. And a lot of them in the Castle area.

If you were at the same mountain not in the basin as me, your idea and my idea of no crowds do not align. It was not horrible, but there were plenty of folks on the hill. Sure,I got fresh tracks all day from when 10 popped until I headed in at 3:45, but I had to work for it. No crowds means no crowds. OTOH, I think I had my best big trees to dogleg run ever. First one in,cold, soft and deep. Snowing right now at 7800'.

Alpine opened 6 at 8:30 so I heard at 8:45 when we loaded. The head start let us get was was left of the untracked until 12:30. Great day with great visibility. High yellow, lower saddle, estelle, and scotty's beam after hiking from scott delivered today.

Yeah, I agree and think it was that the new stuff was light for sure but the sticky spackle from Sunday's bukkake-fest was still hiding down there. Punch-in landings and deep turns got real grabby and could take you over the bars right quick. Just surfing around on top was so excellent, though. So much fun.

And how on earth does 666's edit not get more love?
That was the Aggressive Alpine Skiing mags say they want to see. WTF? Does everyone have that much helmet-cam ennui? That edit had the goods, man.
