Raleys prices are fine. You can maybe get cheaper at the walmart in Carson City before you come up the hill. But the difference isn't extreme. Or if you want cheaper you can hit the grocery outlet further in town.

Oh! I forgot. One more request for info please.
I know the chances are remote but I'll ask just in case.
If it is truly dangerous I won't chance it with my family. But I've found many times when chains are required they're not necessary, esp with front wheel drive and going slow.
So I'm gonna rent a car and head from RNO to SLC around 10am in mid march. I assume rental companies don't provide chains. If chains are required what would be the best route to avoid getting turned around the cops, the fuzz, the Man? Spooner? Mt Rose way? Hwy 80 don't seem worth it for $20-30 cheap chains.
I'll buy chains if I have to, but it would be a shame for one day for a bloody rental. Suggest a good place in RNO for those cheapo-wire chains?
Sincere thanks in advance for sharing any local knowledge.
What the ... When the heck did South Lake Thai Nakorn close?????? First Burger Lounge, now Nakorn - if the Keys Cafe goes away then I am giving up on South Lake and will pretend that I live in Meyers.
Also, when did it start being cool to braap high mark above Kirkwood houses?
Oh yeah, it didn't. Poor form. Why don't you just boot the P Casa and Jakes skintrack while you are going about pissing people off ...

If ur from the 808 area code I'm sure u get pissed when u are stuck behind some touron rubber necking the shit outa every single inch of road when you are trying desperately to get to your favorite break.....
As a tourist in Kauai right now I'm just super glad I'm here off season. I would get so pissed at the idiot drivers it wouldn't even feel like I'm on vacation.
Needless to say if it is snowing and u are going to rock the 2wd Nissan altima with no chains please let people pass you...

Food isn't a big deal, but gas is WAY cheaper in Reno or Carson. There is a Costco in Carson one light past the right turn on 50 to go up to SLT, which is the cheapest gas in the area. If you don't have a Costco card the Arcos in town are second cheapest. The Reno Costco is right next to REI if you need any of that stuff.
The Raleys near the gondy isn't any more overpriced than any other supermarket in town. You'll pay a little bit less in Reno or Carson, but not a lot. They've got a great liquor sale on now if your group can polish off 6 bottles of anything.
TIPS for eating around the Village: almost everyplace in the Village proper is $$$ and not really worth it. Walk two blocks down Friday Avenue, across from the gondola, and tank up on tasty $1 tacos at Taqueria Jimenez for 1/5 the price. If you must do Fire and Ice, go for lunch as it's $15 instead of $30 for the same thing, which actually isn't a bad deal for AYCE. If you've got a car, can walk ~1 mile, or don't mind a short cab ride, Sushi Pier is bomb so long as you go early enough to miss dinner rush. Sit at the bar or you are a sucker. If you've got a car and can make it across town, Artemis is worth the trip.
Schralph: Thai Nakorn is now Benjarong Thai. Haven't been in there, though, so I don't know if the food is the same.
For the guy nickel and diming his vacay....
The best place to panhandle in town is probably near the casinos, but watch out for security.
Yes, the snow on the south shore sucked today, everyone should hit Castle Peak tomorrow.
Thai Nakorm is the same owner, just a new name. I heard it was for some legal thing or something. The food is still good.
Oh thank goodness. I googled and Yelped to get Nakorn's phone number and both came back with "Permanently Closed." Didn't drive the 2 blocks past Orchid's to see what was up, since the weekenders weren't setting up the usual powder day lift line out the door at Orchid's last night. I saw that there is another Nakorn on north shore so maybe there was a dispute between the two, a la Bob Dog / Blue Dog pizza.
iwoody - FWD with snow tires is fine 95% of the time, but most flatlanders don't have proper snow tires and spin their wheels everywhere, hence the chain restrictions. This season the storms have been so warm that FWD and good tires get you anywhere ... So please, just don't rent chains so that you can be hosed and we finally get a cold storm on top of the base that we finally have.
(Sorry, got no beta on chain rentals or cheapies ... Walmart or Kmart???)

Just checking to say that Rose was epic this weekend! Saturday was my best day in 2 or 3 years!! May have some footage later to his week if I can figure out how to edit.
Heading up for more superhero windbuff before work today...
The Reno Costco is near the intersection of Harvard and Plumb -- you can't see it from the airport, but drive west from the airport, turn left on Harvard, and you're there. There's also an REI next door. The Costco and REI both sell discounted ski resort day passes.
I assume you meant SLT, not SLC. Walmart has chains. Mt. Rose highway rarely has chain checkpoints, but frequently has chain controls (higher elevation pass than the others). Hwy 395 to 50 to SLT is probably your best bet.
Eat at Freshies. I thought Schralp was headed there last night and then I guess he changed his mind. In other news I never saw so many cars at Kirkwood on a windy, foggy, non powder day. Pictures at 11.
It was still easy to get Fresh tracks yesterday in South Lake

I ended up driving overnight to kwood late friday/early saturday to avoid any kind of shitshow on a snowy 88, and really liked it. Pretty cool having the whole highway to yourself with the brights on, dry snow falling and no wind. Really an enjoyable drive, felt kinda adventurous for my city-boy ass. Then i just parked in the best spot next to 6 and took a 3 hour nap in the back of my 4 runner.
Had a killer day saturday. I never really followed the crowds until i participated in the eagle bowl chinese downhhill haha. I got hit once and straight up layed out some other guy who turned right into me at the wrong point in my turn. 10 years of football insticts took over and i instinctivly lowered my shoulder and explosivly trucked him. Dude saw me in the lift at the bottom and we laughed our butts off about it haha! I ended up skiing a lot of untouched lines, and sending some of the bigger lines ive ever skied. Def put the OG 191 BillyGoats through their paces through the heavy chop. Great Day.
Btw (im still getting to know my way around the wood, first year having a pass here) and i need to be able to claim the shit out of some of my lines haha. I dropped over thunder saddle a few times went a little skiers left and got first and second tracks down those two steep, narrow, rock walled chutes seperated by a spine/ridge that someone(im guessing 666) had already slayed. i had no idea terrain that cool was lurking there. What is that zone called? Anyways super fun, and really windloaded and awesome to ski light, fast, and playfully.
Ended calling it a day around 3 and chilled in the Red Cliffs Lodge studying for a liscensing exam(really should be studying instead of skiing, but w/e), until they booted me around 630. Do you know of any other place in the area that would be mildly conducive to studying? Im completely fine with loud, i just need light and a table, and no one to kick me out haha.
I think Sunday was more crowded than saturday. As i was leaving i didnt stop passing parked cars till about 200 yards before 88. Ive never been to kwood on a crowded day but honestly i think it does a good job of handling crowds- or maybe, like Alpine, its just that my laps consist of hiking and traversing forever before dropping in.
There was still some soft stuff out towards palisades and under thunder saddle, though it was cut up and some was soft avi debri. I met up with a coworker who apparently has a buddy who always takes him sidecountry out past the boundary, palisades way with no gear at all. He kept trying to have me join him, and i kept asking him leading questions about not having any gear etc, but he didnt get it. The eagle bowl slide on friday and the constant bombing + lots of avi debris in bounds had me extra spooked and doing my own ski cuts, and skiing light and fast in areas i deemed a bit sketchy.
P.S. Yeah, i know, nice blog.

So, i figured instead of poaching beta constantly, and rarely posting it i would try and do us all a solid.
I took the GNAR scoresheet that some one from Vail had created and with the magic of photoshop i created a Kirkwood sheet shown here (for some reason the PDF looks sketchy, but it prints fine):
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B9Fw...zZEJqVnJR/edit
I have finished the rough draft of the "bonus pts" section with kirkwood specific bonuses and may add/remove one or two more eg. add "hand out 10 bags of granola in the line up on a pow day" instead of the classic redbull deal, replaces jumping ropes.
Anyways, what i am having trouble with is naming the lines and the scores to go along with it(first page). this is my first year at Kwood, and i was hoping for some help from you folks. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
