It was great yesterday! cH 10 LAPS w/ a brief rest to watch race runs. Perfect day! West shore proper goes? Didn't look that way from the road. I"M SURE IT IS HORRIBLE OUT THERE!

Yes, zones off corner chute (ice fall area) go well and maybe two tracks down West Shore Proper, so I'm assuming IT GOES. Broadway had a 6 foot crux air to deal with but otherwise blissful cold fast wintery snow.

That sounds like quite a slog with some fun descents. How did you exit?

West Shore, across the lake, up to Fourth of July and down, up and around the Sisters to Round Top, then down the 2500' south side into Summit City Canyon. Then a 2+ hr easy slog out of the drainage up to Forestdale Divide. Rip skins, the road is mostly skiable down to Red Lake. 10.5 miles, 3 descents, 8 hours. Snow was better than expected, north facing consolidated morning powder and supreme afternoon corn. It was a great spring tour.

that is a great tour, though i've only done it the opposite direction during the 'real' spring. what i really enjoy are the various descent options (and aspects). summit city creek is beautiful and generally devoid of other peeps.

Just read you GPS map. I always assumed 4th of July meant something else, namely the chutes that feed down to the lake drainage. That cuts a bit off the long slog, making just a semi long slog. I do enjoy that long descent down to Summit City, but never liked the hike back up, because if you timed the corn perfectly, it was pretty rotten about 2/3 of the way back up. I can recall one long day back there with Schralp and some dude on skis/snowshoe combo.

    So, what you doing Sunday?

And Powdork, you are welcome to join. I'm sure I will still have a hard time keeping up with you even though you are one leg down.

Planning to drive from Reno to Kirkwood on Monday morning. Is 395 S and 88 the best route. Will it take longer than 1.5 hours.

and depending on how the weather pans out. might want to plan for 2. and be careful as 88 climbs and goes from straight on the wide open to windy in a canyon, it can get pretty icy. quickly.

    another great day...

west face opened for the first time this year.

    there was much rejoicing.

it had a surprising amount (~3-4 inches) of pow...

not to mention gorgeous corn down the shaft of light.
    Still waiting...

    Well that was helpful

If you see a tall guy failing at figuring out how to ski soft stuff on rando skis at Squaw or Alpine this weekend say hey.

It was this week in 1982 that an avalanche killed seven people at Alpine.
    Next to the lodge.

(still looking for a helper at the factory...)

Splat meant to post the part about Alpine avalanche around 30 days from now...but he apparently still needs a helper now.

A Wall of White by Jennifer Woodlief, available at the Bookshelf at Hooligan Rocks last I looked. Bernie's Bowl and Jake's are named after two of the victims, the mountain manager and a patroler respectively. I don't think they named anything after the people whose estates sued.
