Five inches of snow on my deck and snowing lightly. My plow guy has been by already--I guess he was as anxious to get out plowing as we are to get out skiing.
That layer went pretty easy....
^ Well, those obs were from yesterday afternoon before the water turned to snow, to add weight on top of the rain-weakened pack. So, you figure 6 to 12" last night, plus another 6 to 12" that NWS/SAC has forecasted for the rest of the storm ... will that do the trick (rip and reset everything)? Will the refreezing free water strengthen change the structure in the lower 25 cm of the snowpack? The other thing that will come into play is how cold the nights get after the ridge comes back in and we go back to a diurnal faceting cycle on what would be a still thin (60-80 cm) snowpack.
However it plays out, we know that it will eventually get better - just a matter of knowing when to start poking at the dog with a stick and knowing that it won't bite back. All I know is that as bad as it can get in California, it's still laughable compared to what peeps in the Rockies have to deal with as far as managing instabilities.

Got to love the man with his linguistic skills
"diurnal faceting cycle"
I can say it is still pissing paste and that is good. No bike riding next week. Thank you Ullr. AFT.
I'm cool with this, as long as you Kirkwood Bro Brah's stay away from Heavenly when 88 closes- TahoeBc
On summit now for second lap since it opened. Nice to ski some supportable snow

What a fun morning. Real snow.
Yikes, that wasnt a lot of taps on that ECT!
Radar suggests that it's stopped? Sigh.
not counting days 2016-17
Stopped snowing and patches of blue visible here in Carson...
Sent from my DROID RAZR using TGR Forums
ride bikes, climb, ski, travel, cook, work to fund former, repeat.
Alpine was good. Obviously dangerous coverage but still some safe-ish spots to ski and get untracked. Got third chair on Roundhouse (they didn't open summit @9am) and the shit-show began.
First run was nice, untracked to the bottom:
That got skied out in a few seconds so I checked out Yellow chair, not much coverage but still good turns:
Then after a few more laps on Roundhouse/Summit most the non-shark-death was tracked, so I boot packed a little stash before calling it quits.
Hoping this late afternoon cycle drops a few more inches to enjoy before the weekend crowds.
About 6 inches at Sugar Bowl at the top--nothing new open or close to it. Crud on crust. A fair amount of blue sky this afternoon. The second wave of the storm has been downgraded to a winter weather advisory. Moderate snow now falling at Donner Lake.

Stopped by Alpenglow to get replacement buckle for my BD Quadrants (older lemon+lime version; first ever issue besides crap stock liners now upgraded and fixed thanks to otto...what was I talking about?) Oh yeah!
Alpenglow gave me replacement buckle for free fifty free, which left me with $15 I had planned to spend on buckle available for treats and p-tex. Replacing buckle was easy -most difficult part was removing old buckle rivets. I really should put this in the tech talk thread for the boot...what was I talking about? Oh yeah!
p-tex is going to be very useful after today. Nice coreshot on one ski and some deep gouges. Still, given the "I don't care" skiing ethos I employed today, I expected much worse. Wondering if this is the season I only ski my rock skis all winter...what was I talking about? oh yeah!
Dawn patrol tomorrow anyone? I have to leave the basin at about 9 so would want to be skinning by 6 to get some of what is supposed to come in tonight. Anyone want to partner up?

It should get better for us... For those guys in the Rockies, sometimes it never gets better.
Any Carson Pass beta? I want to get down there depending on conditions.
I'm kinda wondering if what we had and what we got can in any way consolidate and if there's a prayer in hell for some follow up weather that tamps it down.
Or if it's just another glass on an unstable stack of glasses.
Also waiting to see what powdork skied...
powdork.com - new and improved, with 20% more dork.
Careful everyone skiing BC! Take your time.

Throwing in the towel. Just booked lodging for the family in SLC first week of March.
Does Heavenly normally overstate snow totals or were they just the big winner out of this storm? Surprising to see them have nearly double as much as Kirkwood. Maybe it was their elevation and they didn't get as much rain early on.
