There is not much snow in the BC now. You might be able to find some mini golf lines if you look somewhere below the highest elevation wind exposed peaks. Went out hiking around last Monday 11-25 around Roundtop and E-Back. Roundtop looked pretty peppered with rocks all over the apron. Decided it was a ski touring day and that the skins would be staying on. There was enough snow on the ground to skin all the way out there about a week ago. Elephants back is horrendous, non-skiable/ ridable, the snow was sugary, unconsolidated all the way to the ground and not enough to cover the rocks.

The gully that drops down to the old road next to Red Lake was pretty filled in and more consolidated, probably the only skiable/ ridable pocket in the pass area.

The last storm didn't add much to the cumulative totals, I think whatever fell got wind-hammered and blew off the mountain.

This is from a couple of weeks ago November 11th, dirt hiking.

That being said all I am looking for this year is lack of crowds. I skied Rose last year and it was pretty empty, especially on weekdays. I again have two weekdays a week to ski, but if it's a powder day, I will ski on weekends too. I am considering a Sugarbowl pass, but am unsure how it is crowd wise. I'd do the Squawpine thing, but I heard it's bad on weekend powder days. And Northstar is a no-go just because I don't like it there.

Any suggestions? Or intel on what Sugarbowl is like crowd wise?
Squaw is a zoo even on midweek powder days. Alpine is much better, especially midweek and often not that bad on weekends, if it's not storming, but the options on storm days are limited as the upper lifts are often closed or have poor vis. For crowds SB would certainly be better. Not sure it's worth the extra drive with Rose so close. SB much lower elevation and more trees up top and snow a better call on a storm day.

Regarding the weather forecasts and our run of crappy luck....
This fall seems especially painful because every region from the southwest to the northeast has seen significant snowfall, except California. They were measuring the snow by the foot in almost every ski destination but the Sierra. You would have had better luck skiing powder in Kansas in November than anywhere in CA.

Oh well, better a crappy November than January.

As for the Rose/Sugarbowl pass.... I'd go with Rose personally, depending a little on if you are burnt on that area and how close you are to 80 vs. 431.

your "easy" peak is elephants graveyard i believe. deadwood def not visible from 88. the other "likely " peak in thatzone that usually looks rideable early is known as polaris peak.

Yeah what I'm thinking of is deadwood- You can see it only briefly coming southwest on 88 before you get to red lake. That sounded like what Ottime was talking about but really could be any of these based on his description. There are two good routes but one is more fun. It's a v long day to get out and back I believe but maybe more comfortable as an overnight as I haven't attempted to summit yet, only been back in the zone. Forestdale is obv a lot closer and can be tied into mini-golf loops if your back in elephants graveyard and making your way back over. Haven't skied that side of it but certainly thought about extending the loop out there a few times (though a bit of a meander).

True. I think the crowds have diminished a bit since the KSL acquisition, probably because day ticket buyers figure that if they're paying for Squaw, they're going to ski Squaw. That said, if they manage to get the Hot Wheels replacement installed in summer 2014, storm day options should become a lot better real fast.

And here I thought me starting a new job, that limits my skiing time, would bring on the dumpage
Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

Never seen 80 so empty as this morning over Donner Summit. I saw like 3 vehicles westbound between Truckee and Nyack. Shitty fog through Nyack.

FREE FIREWOOD Small project going on off west side of 89 just north of the 7-11 at SV. Contractor is clearing some tamarack, chipping limbs and leaving logs. I got a full load just yesterday. Makes the trip that much more worth it. They don't want folks there while they are working, but they roll out around 1645. It's green but it's worth grabbing for next year. If you split and stack now it could be ready in spring.

Ya I'm not holding my breath on any 10 day forecast again. Packing up the truck this morning and heading to big sky via snowbird. If the snow doesn't come to us than it's time to goto the snow

Alpine picked up at least 9 inches at the base today, according to the remote sensors. The conditions are improving there rapidly. Reportedly, snowmaking ops have moved to Hot Wheels area this week. Alpine has a non-public soft opening for teams this weekend. There is no plan for an early opening. They need to keep all of the teams occupied at Alpine, then not let their families ski...with a hope they will all go to the Squaw village for lunch, some yoga and to buy a couch.
