Maybe they just count faster than you.
If it is te wet sloppy stuff, then 8 would do just fine. Especially if temps drop hat before the wind gets going.
If you are counting, then get on up the hill and start packing some of it down.

Roger that.
The stick does add some virtual reality to snow plot data.
See you Saturday?
Heavy Dirty
Maybe. Depends how this all pans out.
Clear sky above my house on the coastal south slope. Still clouds on the water and along the ridges. That might be the end of it. But we did get several hours of heavy rain this afternoon.
Kirkwood is opening Friday!
oh, wait. No they're not. Nevermind.

snizzle in kings beach this a.m. and 3" of cappuccino foam on donner summit at about 830 a.m.
drizzle all day in sac.
seemed like it would take some serious wind to move the flakes up high so hopefully the forecast was a joke.

Dozens of tundra swans on Donner Lake this morning (and scattered snow flakes on my deck--better go out and clear the snow with a tweezers.)
Any guesses for actual totals above 8000?
8000 ft where and what aspect? Im going to go poke around up at sugar bowl so i can let you know how much snow there is up there
did the final rainy wave that blasted through SF yesterday afternoon do anything else good up there?
kirkwood had well over a foot up top, but need more. the lower runs (lower monte's, mokelumne, and race course) were low angle smooth like butter and well covered. certainly those could be opened tomorrow but with the threat of huge east winds in the forecast I can see why they wouldn't (although it could mean both heavenly and kirkwood are closed).
someone at the bottom mentioned a no hiking policy.
i would expect them to open saturday or sunday

I hear they are letting it settle and firm before they put the cats out. And get some manmade put down. Would be great if that could happen before the wind builds. Even better if the wind is a bust. Did you hit much on what I would assume would have been upper montes? I think the hiking policy is the same as last year, as in we are working and moving about on the hill and could you pleases stay out of our way, or at least sight, and maybe just go ski the spur instead policy. Based on your report, I think I'll wait until next week, and go about digging int he back yard this weekend.
the winds were pretty brutal at the top and there was some snow moving. Once down to the willows though it was not bad. no wind at all and snow falling straight down at my house currently. the snow is pretty dense and has a good crust on it. but this was 10:30 and things weren't due to get bad til later this afternoon

Yup. Felt the breeze stirring down here and we are in the shadow for this event. Reverse tracks for tomorrow?
poked around at sugarbowl today. A ft plus of snow up higher on lincon but the east winds picked up strong any everything is windcrust firm.
18" at Kirkwood??
8-10" at best at Carson Pass. Turns (a few) were had but they felt like October turns, except colder.
Strong wind coming from the east was rapidly transporting snow. Felt good to be on snow but wasn't much to brag about.
i could definitely see it being close to 18 at kirkwood. definitely 14 at least. heading to himmel haus to watch valhalla

that's the spirit!
you know I never mounted those Darksides? I kept waiting for more snow
I didn't hit shit but we were over in the sentinel bowl area. snow totals were in the 16-24" range with a nice wind buff on the top.
Unfortunatley Kirkwoods hiking policy has now gone to shit. We had a nice talking to by security. Basically if you hike from within the property owned or managed by Kirkwood/Vail you are trespassing. No uphill hiking. if you hike in from private property or forest service there is nothing they can do.
the consequences are pretty light. they'll tell you not to hike & if you are caught multiple times they may revoke pass priveledges. but no law enforcement.
I for one don't have a pass there anymore & could really give a shit what thier policies are. I've been hiking early season for 15yrs & i'm not about to stop just cause they are scared about thier liability.
i thought it was funny that we were parked in the TC lot & stayed totally out of the way & still got screwed with. never saw a snowcat, snowmobile, anything.
