I have an old XTR one I can send you. It's the rapid fire plus, I'll include a machined red aluminum mount for it. Iirc, it was the front shifter that died on me so the rear should be good.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using TGR Forums

I think I have a SRAM Attack 8-sp which works with Shimano derailleurs. I'll can check in the morning.

(I know I have an 8-sp X7, if'n you have a spare SRAM rear der for her bike)

Pretty sure the 9 speed one works. The old low end derailleurs are 8/9 speed. No kidding.

and playing cards in your spokes turns your bike into a motorcycle, and a tooth under the pillow brings a visit from the Tooth Fairy who leaves you money, and having no mechanical skills and no riding skills qualifies you as an Internet Expert of MTB.

since I have extremely limited riding and even more limited bike mechanical skills I am stuck with asking these fools for help

    Edit

I realize I am looking for older, low end parts, but I'd rather find them here for free or cheep than spend good $ on my wife's shit bike

If it's just a commuter, there's a Nashbar one for $30. My buddy has it on his old Fischer with an 8sp rear. Seems flimsy, but I guess it works.
Pink Bike classifieds may also be your friend. Trust me, the 9sp shit works. Both I and my buddy have a 9sp derailleur on an 8sp rear that shifts just fine. Nothing made in the last few years is going to say 8.
Do you have any good used shops near you?

It's not the derailleur, he would have to buy a new cassette and chain if he went 9 sp. the indexing of a 9sp shifter on an 8sp cassette does not match.

Is it broke or is did just stop clicking? if its the latter it could probably be fixed with some triflow soaking and a little time.

Also I have a 8 speed V-brake combo alivio you can have if you think it would work. I robbed the shifter barrel adjuster but that could be borrowed from your broken one.
a positive attitude will not solve all of your problems, but it may annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

This ^^ my touring bike, had an alivio der with 7 or 8 spd, I put a 9spd deore shifter/chain/cassette on the bike and it worked fine with that original alivio der

edit : check out chainreaction or other online sites for what you need
