have not been to Japan, Koyote, or Hana yet. Went with jtran, its so....different than what i am used to for ramen, in the best way possible.

ichizu review -

highlights:

- amazing tare, great pork, perfect noodles
- awesome karage (both of us preferred it to Koyote's)
- great yuzu sorbet (not pictured)
- Japanese toilet
- nice selection of local kombucha and soda

lowlights:

- $20 for a bowl of ramen w/egg. great ramen, but Koyote is cheaper and just as good. Koyote also has a much broader menu (their mapo tofu alone makes it worthwhile to go there)
- no beer
- no napkins, only Kleenex

Hana has a pretty built out full service menu so I'd imagine that ichizu will get there once they are not soft open only. I saw on insta that they had a chef work his first dinner shift there last night, so still staffing up, training, etc.

Koyote's space is certainly awesome, and the mapo tofu is great. They'll have to figure out something to do about the sun during the evening with those big glass windows, if it's kinda bad now just wait a month.


The prices I think are kind of whatever IMO. Yea, it sucks to pay $20 (18 w/o egg), but I'd rather eat ramen less and pay 20 for it to be good vs. eat it more often and eat tosh's or that chain place's junk ramen for 13-15 or whatever it costs now.

Alternatively, just book a $1500 flight to japan and you can get 3 bowls as good or better a day for 1000 yen

Just went to Hana as we were in PC for the afternoon. Maybe an off day, but one server and lots of things were out. One friends chicken katsu curry was room temp at best and while comparing tonkatsu to shoyu is not the same, it was underwhelming at best. The two pieces of takoyaki I had had one small piece of octopus total.

Ate at Kevin Finch's "this is not a popup" residency at The Ruin last night. French/new american, top level SLC cooking without a doubt. Was told this would be ongoing for "at least another month". High recommend. @_arthurslc on instagram

went to cafe contento last night, really phenomenal experience. simple menu, somewhere between Mexican comfort food and high-ish end. fair price point ($100 for an app, dinner, drinks, dessert & tip). highlights were the mushroom chorizo (!!) and the blended salsa. shrimp fajitas were also phenomenal.

overall, great little joint. they serve fantastic coffee and have a great setup - didn't get to try it, but I absolutely would love to come here for breakfast.

Tried to goto pho 777 pre Maverik Center concert last night but it was slammed, and I knew it would take forever so audibled to...

Tacos Lopez, Tijuana style taco place which was next door.

I know there are a million taco places in the valley but this place was great. Lots of different meat options and I'm not that adventurous but went with Asada and El Pastor Vampiros. Top notch. I've never really lived in a place with great mexican food before I moved to the valley so my opinion my be a bit suspect lol ..Definitely a great pre show dinner. There's a ton of great food options pre show out in west jordan..

Hey gang -- I'm looking for venues to host a 20-person dinner, corporate event. Folks are flying in and staying near City Center, so transit time is important.

Because most people will be coming from great food cities like NYC, SLC-ness/views/mountain experience is more important than food, although the food should be top quality. Price not an issue.

Top tier: Cucina, Log Haven in Millcreek
Next tier: Mazza, HSL, Arlo

Is there anything in Kimball Junction you'd recommend? I think true PC is too far away.

Central ninth is a great neighborhood for all that, Loki coffee, c9 market, whatever food truck is at TF brewing or fisher, the Pearl, ramen ichizu. For downtown, the ethnic foods are a little more sparse. laziz kitchen, Franklin Ave is a little more $$, from skratch is kinda basic but always good quality, arempas is great. Eva’s bakery, culpa, the rose establishment for coffees.

I agree quality has def. gone downhill has they expanded and switched concepts a bit, but I do like supporting them as a business...not that I actually go often (because it's not great lol)

Also, love first Phall but from scratch is very mids, not a recommend from me.

In deep downtown I've really liked Felt recently, and franklin ave is great too. If you are in that area you can hop on trax to central 9th to hit phall's other recommendations, which are good ones. Nohm and the Pearl for asian cuisines

New vinyl bar The Green Room just opened on 4th and main st and it's a great vibe in there, plus pretty affordable drinks.
