    Detroit Area Mags

Are there any decent ski shops anywhere near or at Mt Holly? The Nohills family is heading that way on Monday to test out our new skis Well, except for MrNohills. He couldn't find any boots that fit locally and was thinking that maybe he could buy some there and then get the skis he bought here mounted and use them on Monday. Is that even possible to get same day mounting?

Oh, and A-Wreck, clean out your PM box!

"Decent" is relative, I found out.

In Michigan, I'd trust the techs at the ski area to do a proper mount than I'd trust techs at a retail outlet, save a few.

As for retailers that do mounts ... Don Thomas, Nichols, or Sun & Snow should be fine. Pick one based on your location.

www.sunandsnowsports.com was my stand-by when living in Ann Arbor. Not necessarily nearby to Mt. Holly, but if you're coming through that direction it might be worth it to check out. Can't really go wrong making a visit to Ann Arbor in general, either.

Yeah, the food, culture, and atmosphere that completely blows away anything in Michigan, particularly around Detroit (and rivals most midwest towns) is a real drag. Stay away for sure.

They might have food, culture, and atmosphere, but do they have a big Golden Dome? Hmmmmmm? I didn't think so.

Edit: Ann arbor is a nice town, I just hate, and I really mean hate, U of M. which makes me leery of Ann Arbor.

I figured that's where the sentement was coming from. But take it from me, having spent 4 years under the Dome, AA is an OK place to live. My car only got egged once.

Don't worry, most people who were born & raised in Ann Arbor hate U of M too.

Shit, I live 12 miles away, like the town but hate the U and its' snotty ass students.

If it wasn't for the snotty-ass students, it'd be a great town to spend way too much money in. If you go through Kalamazoo, Lee's Sports is a very reputable shop. Outpost Sports in South Bend is good too. Anyone know if they're still doing the "terrain park" out back where the beach volleyball court is during the summer? (bugsugar, I'm looking in your direction)

That's why summer is the best there because everyone goes home. There was a noticable difference in the scene from season to season.

Outpost Sports must have changed a lot or got new ownership since I was there. That place was laughable. At the time they catered to the 3 people in South Bend that skied, and then all the UND/SMC girls from California that didn't realize it got ass cold in South Bend and had to buy TNF down jackets on the first cold day in November.

I've somehow never had a problem with Boyne country sports located at square lake rd. and Woodward. They have always done a good job with my skis. However, everything around here is relatively busy. I wouldn't be surprised if you had to wait a day or so to pick them up. Or at least thats what they'll tell you. Then you give them an extra ten bucks and they'll hurry it up.

It's tough to make money as a shop in a non-skiing town in the midwest. Selling TNF puffies to college girls doesn't seem like the worst way to make money though.

-edit- throw in a 6 pack to have the shop guy move them to the top of the list if they're busy.

WRONG. Ann Arbor is for chicks and queers. It BLOWS away anything in MI in the blowing category. If you like frat boys and J.A.P's Ann Arbor is the place to be. Even the super mellow ultra-cool pot head types are just fucking trustafarians pretending to be poor. I used to think my sister's freinds there were pretty cool until they graduated and moved back to mom and dads in south beach/asssspen/l.a. and retired.

Edit for fng: J.A.P. is not a derrogatory reference against japanese people OR Jewish women. It's simply a term used to describe the type of people you will find there, NOT including everyone from that race/religion.

Go easy on the slangs man. Some one is bound to get up in arms about 'em.

-edit- I was talking about 'queers'. I personally don't care, but didn't want to see a good guy get flamed over it.

Every place has its stereotypes etc. From your slagging of Ann Arbor I could just as easily figure that you are getting your Camaro ready to go cruise Pontiac and Royal Oak this summer.

Big liberal universities are going to draw in kids like that no matter what. Letting that scene influence your opinion of the town is typical for anyone who doesn't live there and is intimidated by it. Yet there are people who live there year round, and have so for years that are just as important to town culture, if not moreso.

Yes. I own a 1993 I-Rocz, it's red and the bird on the hood is chipping away but, that'll be at maaco next week getting fixed. And, the chaldeans kicked me out of Pontiac and I lost my only shiny shirt so, Naturally, I can't go to Royal Oak either. Who said anything about being intimidated? 40,000 geeks do not intimidate me. Even if they have giant geeky muscles and a love for violence.

Oh, and, I'm sorry for intimidating you.

Edit: nothing personal against you. I'm having a strange day. And I hate that school and that place.

Hey 13 where in Michigan are you from?
I grew up in Plymouth if I recall it was 12 or 13 miles from A.A.
Parents still live there but I don't find myself back there very often I get them to come out here instead.

Hahahaha.....you made fun of Outpost. I like you.
No the ownership has never changed there, but it sure needs to. The owner is a dick and a half........questionable business ethics, treating employees like crap, etc. I used to work there, that's how I know this. However, if you do need tech work done there, Joe the shop manager is pretty good. And there are other good people there too, but the guy who calls the shots is an assclown.

It pretty much just caters to overweight middle schoolers looking to buy the cheapest board Burton offers.

Edit: That's a negative on the terrain park, FNG. I think it only went for one season, maybe two? Insurance was too high.

Just my $.02, I've never had anything but good experiences at Nichols. Located Right off I-75/Sashabaw Rd. (Exit 89). This is only a few miles south of Mt. Holly. Seems like the best location wise, unless someone has had gotten a bad deal from them.

I can help you with a same day mount at Boyne Country Sports in Bloomfield Hills if you need it. Also if you are in the Rochester area The Ski Company will always do mount while you wait. They are a bit expensive but have well experienced techs. REI in troy is the cheapest and will do it same day if you are a member and ask nicely. I have a good feeling this time of the year just about any shop can get it done while you wait.

Thanks for all the info, guys. I appreciate it. I'll run it past MrNohills and see what he wants to do. I know I don't want to spend valuable ski time at a store....
