    Verbier Ride Big Mountain Results

Results from the Verbier Ride Big Mountain Event were recently posted here:

They usually put up some rockin vids too so keep checking back there.

And have to throw another shout to Craig Garbiel from Kirkwood again as he got 8th. Dude's killin it this year...top 10 at Snowbird (and won the Sickbird), top 10 here at Verbier, and 1st place at Taos.

Tyrone, A couple years ago you “beat” Ted Davenport in the Kirkwood qualifier, you should have quit your lucrative job a pursued a life of poverty and marginal fame on the big mountain circuit… you’d be on the podium. While I’ve never spoken to Craig, I’m stoked a Kirkwoodite is showing the frogs how we ski in motherfucking California. REPRESENT!

I was talking to Craig's fiance, Adrienne, yesterday. She said he was kinda bummed he didn't place higher. He was there with Dana and Barbara and they were in such a hurry to get to Cham, he didn't even get to hang around for the awards ceremony. He's staying with Benji in Cham now.

The comp was on Mont Gele, not Bec de Rosse. I wonder why not the Bec de Rosse.

Have you ever skied off the Bec des Rosses? It's not a mountain that you can hold an open-to-all freeskiing competition on. All the faces on it are huge, very steep with horrible exposure. It's in a totally different league to the faces that other freeskiing comps are held on. If there was a freeskiing competition there people would die. And that's why the Extreme is invitation only.

Bec des rosses has been invented as a freeride contest place by the verbier xtreme folks. To keep the spot in its best possible shape, in the month before the xtreme a verb mountain guide take daily care on the bec and stops EVERYONE who tries to get in, climb and ride. The verbier ride is a different league event, and the W/NW face of mont gelè is cool enough for this contest. BTW, this year snow was on the mont gelè (the lift has never been opened so far), and it has been widely debated whether or not use another spot for the verbier ride. Said that, this will be the second year for skiers at xtreme (last year locals dominated... but very few of other invited skiers really had a chanche to ride the bec des rosses before).

after her 2nd place at the verbier ride the italian ski forums went . I guess she got the best result EVER for an italian (male or female) in a freeride contest

As was said for you to get just anyone on that face would be stupid. The terrain there is just scary. Sure it can be skied, as enough people do/have, but the kind of elevated risks taken in a comp would turn that face into a bloodbath.

Plus, Warren the organiser of the Ride, summed it up perfectly when I was speaking to him this summer. He has footage of a guy just tomahawking down the whole thing nearly, who's leg some how stayed on because the skin didnt get punctured and tear, even though his his femur basically disentigrated (sp?) during the fall, leaving it flopping around as he bounced down the slope to be heli'd out to ICU.
The guy decided to stop above a small 5-6ft drop and wait for his partner to clear and get safe. He then though he could take the drop and ski down. Unfortunately, a "small" drop on the 50 odd deg. slope sent him on a ride he didn't want.
Warren's personal comment on the face is that even having lived in Verbier for nearly 10 years now, the one time he has skied it is enough for him, and he's in no rush to get back up there on it. And with the amount of experience he has in gnarly terrain, if says its risky you can bet your house it is.

    Et Voila!

The face skied is the big steep one in pic's center running right off the top between the two clearly visible ridges (partly hidden behind the front ridge).
    Ruoghly 2000 ft vertical at 50 - 60°.

Nice touch to the thing is that the competitors have to climb up. Seen pictures of the climb itself, and it looks intresting itself..
They only place the photographes on the slope with a heli.

The floggings will continue until morale improves.
