Ok. Doing the Barbieheimer double feature today. Been trying to avoid any of the discourse online about either movie so I’ll check back in with my thoughts in six or seven hours

Good call. Just go check 'em out and judge for yourself. Should be a good time! That has to feel trippy to watch such completely disparate films back to back. Haha. My only suggestion is do NOT go for the jumbo sized soda for the viewing of Oppenheimer. It's 3 hours long. Do movies do intermissions any more? Like in Gone with the Wind. MUCH needed IMO.

    Just came out of OPPENHARBIE.
We saw Oppenheimer first followed by a Barbie chaser. IMHO, this is the perfect order to see them in.

We had 45-minutes between screenings and there was a micro brewery across the way so we went for drinks. I had to pee fierce during the third act of Barbie!

    But I digress.

Both films are excellent and there is actually a through-line one can draw between them.

Yes! Thanks for talking me into that order. It’s definitely the way to go.

Both movies show the folly of man very well but in two totally different ways.

Oppenheimer was exactly what I thought it would be and Barbie was very different. Not sure why I didn’t put together that it was a movie aimed at young girls, but I sort of felt weird going as a solo 40 year old man. Luckily the movie teaches us to be unapologetically ourselves.

Apparently the incels in the internet have been calling Margo Robbie mid? Just goes to show they’ve neither seen Margo Robbie, or a real life woman before.

You nailed the main through-line much more succinctly than what has been rolling around in my head since seeing both films earlier today.

Neither film was what I expected, which was cool.
I went into Oppenheimer with high expectations, because, well, Nolan. They were met.
I went into Barbie with low expectations because I loathed the director’s previous outing Lady Bird. They were exceeded elevenfold and then some.
Both films are totally made for cinephiles; Oppenheimer due to the mastery of sound and vision, Barbie for its unabashed homage to other films.

And I hear ya about feeling weird about attending Barbie as a dude. Luckily, I went with a couple from work; I don’t think I would have gone to it solo. That said, I don’t think the film was squarely aimed at a young girl audience. Me and my buddy Mateo laughed way more and way louder than his lady friend did…

Both films easily make my “Best Of 2023” listz

I will be excited to watch Oppenheimer again for the cinematography and the sound design. Both were amazing.

I watched The Red Shoes (I think that’s the name) the other day on TMC and they had Greta Gerwig on there talking about how it inspired her with Barbie. Pretty cool.

Interesting about The Red Shoes connection. That film did not come to mind while I was watching Barbie. Now I’mma be up all night trying to see the similarities…

GG name drops The Red Shoes and a few other classic film inspirations in this RS piece…I am missing the references, which makes me feel like less of a cinephile than I pretend to be/thought I was…

    https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movi...ie-1234769344/

    (PS
The RS journalist drops the ball in regards to mentioning films that inspired Gerwig, but then not even asking her about them or their inspirations…)

This piece with Ben M. from TCM is much better…

Yeah I rarely catch references so I’m more happy when I know ones than sad when I miss them, but I’m just a hack that likes going to the theater.

I felt the Pee Wee’s Big Adventure vibe and my buddy Mateo said it reminded him of The Truman Show and I understand The Red Shoes elements (The Archers had insane production values and a crazy cinematic look all their own), as well as the nods to both Gene Kelly and Jacques Demy.
I definitely saw nods to The Matrix and Jacques Tati, as well as West Side Story, which Gerwig doesn’t mention.

That is awesome. 35 years. Wow.

And yes, that movie is a wake up call. Modern marketing has gone even farther in the digital era.

And no. It’s not an alien lizard people wake up call. It’s a fun movie with social programming overtones.

Welp. As was to be expected I suppose, all sorts of Barbenheimer trailers have been dropping. Here's but one of them:

Hey, Dookey. Thought you'd appreciate this. Projectionist setting up a proper IMAX film reel for Oppenheimer. Love his enthusiasm. There's truly something nostalgic about that analog clickety-clackety experience of film.

    Okay, that was cool!

I was surprised that he was handling the film with his bare hands though…

Young kid I work with is more hardcore than me in regards to Oppenheimer: he saw it in IMAX opening day (conversely, I waited 5 days), then saw it in “regular” digital the next day, and told me he’s contemplating driving the 2 hour one-way to Sacramento to see it on 70mm (it’s only playing on 19 screens in NA in that format). I dunno if I am motivated to do the trek, then again I’ve seen a number of films in 70mm over the years and this kid hasn’t ever seen one!

Here’s the list of 70mm screenings:

If you plan to see Oppenheimer, definitely see it on the biggest screen possible with the best sound.

Saw Talk to Me last night. Creepy and well worth the time if you're into the genre.

TMNT Mutant Mayhem was solid. It did the franchise justice without rehashing the canon too much. I loved the animation style, good story and action, and really funny. Very Seth Rogen in tone and humor.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

The A24 banner gives me hope…
However, after being severely disappointed by all the recent theatrically released, well reviewed horror films (I thought Halloween Ends, Smile, The Black Phone, Evil Dead Rise, and M3gan were all horrible) I am a bit hesitant to venture to the theater for this one.
I see that it has a stellar RT rating, yet I am finding that quite a few of the folks who review horror films these days seem to have no grasp of the genre or what is truly scary or even remotely original.

I am slightly intrigued by the trailer, however.

I read that the directors mostly relied on practical effects, which is cool. Plus I was moderately impressed by one of their YouTube shorts:.

I have been digging the trailers and the animation looks cool.
My nephew is in town next week, so I may have to be the cool uncle and take him to it ( will probably have to take the niece to Barbie, as well).
Or I could just force both of them to sit through Oppenheimer!
(Note: I loved Oppenheimer, but feel it might be funny to drag a coupla kids ages 5 and 8 to see it; though methinks others in attendance might not be too thrilled…)

    MEG 2: THE TRENCH
I’m actually confused by the abysmal RT critics rating (28%) since this is the most fun I’ve had at the cineplex in quite some time (okay, since July 24 when I did the Oppenharbie double-feature).
Sure, the CG is kinda shoddy and the story is cobbled together from a long list of films ranging from all the Jaws movies, to the crappy Jurassic Park sequels, the classic It Came From Beneath the Sea, along with DeepStar Six, Leviathan, Underwater, and Deep Rising. Plus a glorious dollop of Deep Blue Sea.
If you haven’t figured it out by now, Meg 2 is an unabashed B-movie which presents very little in the way of originality. Yet it’s kind of a glorious cinematic snack which revels in its ludicrously conflated imitation.
Helmed by Ben Wheatley, who is best known for quirky and cool cult offerings such as The Hit List and A Field In England, the story moves at a brisk pace so you have nary a minute to ponder the absurdity of it all. Aiding the director in keeping things afloat is Jason Statham, a man with a knack for turning even the most routine of action films into something watchable thanks to his shining pate and his lovably gruff ass-kicking manner. Additionally, both Cliff Curtis and Page Kennedy bring some nice comedic chops to offset Statham’s straight man.

So, yes Meg 2: The Trench is stupid...stupid fresh! (i.e. highly entertaining).

    Longer review here:

***Eschewing the trailer as it contains a boat ton of spoilers.
