When you buy the discs, you OWN those discs, which are copies of software and two activation uses. That just means you can have that copy running on two computers legally. So I throw a disc into my PC, use the activation code, and then throw that same disc into my laptop, and use the same activation code. Whenever either computer is connected to the internet, the adobe borg checks registration numbers, sees they're legit and if you want to use it, there's all kinds of poorly thought out online help and forum access available straight from the programs. (CS6 didn't even come with manuals) If I try the same disc with a third computer, that registration number is invalid. You can avoid this by never connecting that computer to the internet.
When a new version that looks worthwhile came out, I'd deactivate the copy (it's a menu item somewhere) on each computer, and then whomever I sell the discs to then has two legal activation uses.......and so on and so on. So owning the disc is essentially the ability to copy the software and activate it on two computers at any given time. But you do own those discs/copies and can do whatever you want with them.

FYI -- for anyone who might not necessarily need the latest and greatest (you or someone you know)-- all Adobe CS2 products are available for free on their site.
