People who drive with their high beams on behind me at night make me want to rip my rear-view mirror off and throw it at them.

ha. For me it's usually just they're trying to get over for a merge or an exit and I give them some space and a flash so they know they can get over and I'm not gonna fuck with 'em.

Me too, that's why I was surprised by Hugh's comment but then he fixed it.

quickly turning headlights on and off again does not make it so someone cannot see you.
Thank you mtngirl. This is exactly the explanation that every rig driver that I've ever talked to has said. And yes, in construction I talk to A LOT of truckers.

Other situations where this is crazy useful: in nighttime traffic ANYWHERE.

edit: and re-reading it my previous example sucks.
I've concluded that DJSapp was never DJSapp, and Not DJSapp is also not DJSapp, so that means he's telling the truth now and he was lying before.

so if they'd all people rather don't why do so many say thank you with their lights?

It can't be because DJSapp is in with all of the gay truck drivers and speaks for them.

you've got a wrx right? i used to get flashed any time i had the fogs on in my '00 RS. up until '05 the fogs were some big boys if i remember right. make sure youre fogs/headlights are adjusted properly, its usually just one bolt.

and i flash at anyone w/ out headlights on when its dark, or if i just passed a piggy.

For me, flashing my brights is kinda like kicking a dudes foot in the next toilet stall...they both mean I want some hot man-on-man action.

All these other meanings are news to me...

    YMMV

I use it to tell drunk aussies and brits they are driving on the wrong side of the road. Flash over and over and honk. I'm not joking either

Yes, when we come on a string of assholes, (yes assholes drive slower, maniacs drive faster), all lined up, not passing, we actually can sometimes only pass 2-3 at a time. I've passed 10 at a time on 97, then look in my rearview and the whole group will still be putzing along at 55 in a 60 2 miles behind me. Invariably, somebody will have flashed their brights at me in that line up. They're MAD!!! They're emasculated!!!!!!!!

Yes, flash your brights you dumbfuck, sorry your rig can't corner worth a shit.
This. I routinely have to blast by up to 10 cars on the 395 to or from Mammoth, as they are lined up, all going 55 and no one is passing the slow camper up front. Pretty exciting to pass 10 cars at 110+, on a two lane highway.
Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

One hand to hold the bowl, one to hold the lighter, knees to steer, right?

FAIL. All truckers flash their lights ON/OFF to indicate that you have passed enough to switch back into your lane. The passing truck will flash tail lights on/off as a thanks. Sense?....not so sure..... but that is the proper etiquette.

with a vape it freed the hand, thanks for pointing that out.
i feel safer and still have time to flash the highway creepers, pass everything and keep a good eye out for 5-0.

One time after someone followed me right on my bumper with brights on for 10 miles I lost it and pitched a handful of change out the sunroof, and somehow avoided getting my ass kicked.

Dunno if mentioned already but you can get pulled for "improper use of highbeams" in some states. Don't be polite or helpful if you are holding. In switzerland, they will get downright aggressive if they think you are signaling to warn others of a speed trap. Don't do it,here. Probably the same in the US and will throw the improper use at you.
