Recomend me some trails around the san rafeal swell.

Always wanted to explore this area, I've been googling but figure some of you could probably give me the goods quicker. Not looking for anything super gnarly as I have one knee thats still not 100%. Just want to cruise around see some cool shit and ride some fun trails. I've found some websites with trail names and some descriptions, but not much on maps or directions.

I'm also open to suggestions for any other out of the way rides, around southern utah, doesnt have to be epic singletrack, just some cool journies, maybe off the beaten path a bit.

Anyone? I've found out about devils racetrack and 5 miles of hell, those are on the to do list someday, just not in the cards for me right now with the knee. Anyone have some suggestions on cool rides to explore the geology of the area that arent super technical?

That's one of the few areas I've been to that I didn't give a rat's ass about bikes.

    That place is rad.

I think 5 miles of hell is a moto trail. From what I've seen/heard, it would be pretty miserable on a mountain bike. Most people think it's pretty miserable on a moto.

There is also a great loop at the Wedge Overlook. Fun, rolly, singletrack that follows the canyon rib. Great primitive camping up there as well.

If I were going to that area, I wouldn't bring my bike unless I was spending a few days in Moab or St. George on either side of the trip. There's way too many other things to do/see in that part of Utah.

Thanks Hugh, that was good of you to point that out.

Wildman, not sure what your deal is but that doesnt really sound like what I'm looking for this trip.

5 miles is rideable by bike but tough so not too good with a bum knee. Black Dragon Wash was fun on a bike - good exploring kind of trail. Out and back. From a friend's site - http://home.chpc.utah.edu/~mcuma/ima...rgn/index.html

^^^these two trails are one in the same
good water canyon rim is top notch! a great ride. highly recommend it. It is the wedge overlook loop.

the swell is huge, going to be hard to see it all in one trip. but great slots, hiking and climbing in the area

Not a ton of biking in the swell that I know of, but lots of biking just north in price thats worth checking out.
utahmountainbiking.com is a great resource for trails in utah.

I really wouldn't go to the swell just to bike, so many awesome slots, not so many good mtn bike trails

oh and right now is a good time to monitor water levels as some of the slots will flood enough to allow a kayak or duckie down them. probably the best way to experience a slot canyon imo

Yea, I hear the 'rafeal swell is not great for biking' comments. I'm not looking for much in terms of trails though, just views and miles. The knee has been getting stronger but I haven't been on a bike in a long time, just looking for some mellow trails or even dirt roads with great views to sort of ease into things before heading down to fruita/moab/canyonlands then skiing in colorado, slot canyons and techy scrambly hikes are probably still out of the question at this point.

Sounds like I've gotten a few good suggestions that meet those criteria pretty well. Thanks guys.

Leroy we will probably be around the swell later in the week, wanting to maybe ride that goodwater rim trail, hike a couple slot canyons. Look for gold mazda truck pulling a little burro camper, or pop me a pm.

Leroy- eardlys and temple are only accessible by 4x4 or mtn bike...the others were canyons to check out. Sorry if i mislead you or misunderstood the purpose of the post. I agree that you could have more fun in this area sans bike.

No worries wildman, I could of been a bit more clear. I'm going to swing by fruita moab and parts unkown after the swell, so I'll have a bike with my anyways, I'll start hiking in a few weeks but at the start of this trip I just want to get stronger on a bike because I think that will be easier on the knee than hiking just yet. Just wanted some cool scenic rides to get out and see a new corner of the world while easing the knee back into biking. I've been skiing so I'm not too worried, but better safe than sorry. I'll check out those canyons someday, thanks for the suggestion.

Sounds like theres a few that would be great for that, I'm stoked.

homemadesasla, I actually wasn't planning on starting this trip till the first week of may but I was pondering perhaps just a getting out of town for a weekend or so sometime, I'll let you know if I end up going. Thanks for the invite.

We rode.a.bunch of.the.Temple mtn loops. Drove to where we could ride to orange, then looped green to blue. Wild country back there, bring a big repair kit and some strong legs. Tried to hike ding to dang today, but too much water for us. Now poised at the wedge for Goodwater rim tomorrow, but it is currently raining lightly.

Leroy there are 10000s of dirt roads out here to help recup your knee.

Come.ride.with us in the.tetons this summer!

Would definitey recommend goodwater rim as well, I was about 4 months post ACL and that was the first bigger ride I did, its pretty easy and definitely excellent scenery.

The waterfall trail is pretty nice on a mtn bike. The only negative is the couple of miles of sand wash at the end. You can finish it as a loop back to your car by using some jeep roads on the way back.I usually moto down there but I have biked that trail twice. Go in at goblin valley side, and it is a few miles in on the left at the top of a hill.

The Red trail out by five miles of hell seems bikeable also, but on the technical side. There is a whole network which are labeled by different colors of paint on the slickrock in places. Se if you can get one of the maps from the Sage riders moto club if there are no mtn bike maps. They put the trails in
