Just noticed that the hiway to the Lassen visitors center is closed at the S NP border. Anyone know the story?
that’s always the winter closure
I didn't believe in reincarnation when I was your age either.
Here?s a pic to explain. When you met us to ski, we drove to the visitors center. However as of a few days ago the hiway was closed from the park border (I?ve drawn it in purple). Today however it?s reverted to the normal winter opening, ie is open to the visitors center.
Edit: TGr is screwed up today and won?t let me post a pic. Anyway I?m glad things are back to normal and hiway is open to visitors center again rather than just to park boundary.
Shasta on Thursday 4.18 via Avi Gulch. Hard freeze night prior, stayed frozen/firm to ~3:00 p.m. at ~13,000 ft. Although Red Banks were rimed up, slight wind and cold meant no ice-balls raining down on the ascent. Stacked snow pack and smooth surfaces from the trailhead. Shimering corn harvesting below 11,500. A+ conditions. Will try to post a picture later.
Sick
Glad you cleared that up. Was questioning my self worth. Still good effort
off your knees Louie
Confirming the sweet spring conditions. Several long time locals claiming best corn in years. Just sayin since I can’t post any pics.
Although more storms on the way this week…

Any Lassen updates?
No first hand knowledge but it appears the north entrance is plowed but closed to vehicles to the Devastation Area which is relevant for a bike approach: https://www.nps.gov/lavo/planyourvis...ing-update.htm
In the meantime, Shasta had a return to winter with this lousy event: https://www.shastaavalanche.org/node...8-73783cf66792
Their plan was to open the road to car access Friday to Devastated Area but when the forecast changed to 2 ft snow this weekend they decided to delay opening.
Friday was one of the best corn days of the year. Started at S visitors center, walked on pavement (hudge snowpack they’d plowed thru) to the hot springs & then up to Lassen. S face off the top was smooth & perfect. With some skinning & traversing we scored 2 more good runs with more W aspects. One of those cool sunny days where the corn window seems endless.

Will be skiing shasta for the near future starting later this week. If anyone’s looking for a touring partner feel free to reach out
Seemed busy yesterday in Avi Gulch, so audibled to Casaval Ridge.
Treated to solitude
(other than a 75 year old tele skier who passed me on the up!) and a combo of shimmering corn and hot pow descending Giddy Giddy about 1:00 p.m. Much warmer than two weeks ago, but no suncups. Parking lot was full and down the road with lots of folks reporting getting to the summit. Still 10 miles of snow cover to Brewers' Ck., as of yesterday per the rangers.
Anyone have any updates on whether the road to the Devastation Area at Lassen is open to vehicles? Park service hasn't updated for a week.
Skied really good corn of SE face of Shastina this morning. Not quite primo yet, new snow still needs a little bit more time to transition but probably by tomorrow/Monday it will be about there
Lassen road from the NW entrance is open to the Devastated Area

Shasta lassen are rad. Thx all for the pics and reports. Living vicariously.
Let me know if Lemurians are spotted..
It was a nice weekend indeed. Finally ticked off the trinity chutes. We were a bit early (10:30 descent) for soft conditions at the top, but from about 12.5k to 9k was nice corn.

COVID is going through the Shasta / Weed communities

Yup, my buddy just tested positive on Wed after our visit this weekend and I had mild symptoms on Mon/Tue as well but tested negative on Wed/Thu.
