^^ nice work. I wonder if that icy suncupping will melt down smooth with the corn cycle temps, or if it will get worse?

Skied some of Shasta from Bunny Flat yesterday and hiked up to 11,500 and there was still a very icey glaze and rain crust about 1" thick. Not the most fun skiing down to 10k or so, but then the sun softened lower slopes for some good corny turns. Was about a .5 mile hike to skinning. Skied to within .25 miles of the car. Great coverage!
My take on it is that with the days being so short and the sun angle low, the surface snow doesn't change as much as it would later in the year. In other words, what you get is what you got. Not a bad thing for November though!

Skied shasta last Sunday and Monday. Rained pretty high up sat night through much of Sunday. Fun slush down low and ice above 10k. Monday the clouds finally broke and softened the ice from the previous night. Overall fun turns to be had on a solid base. Only had to hike 5 min before skinning from bunny flat.

Hello darkness my old friend
I'm looking at Lassen tomorrow and Shasta Monday. Anyone been up Lassen lately? Should I just do Shasta both days?
Seems like kinda bad timing for weather: http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick...2#.WDEADPkrLIU
Thinking about a trip this weekend to Shasta... has anyone gone out recently? Looks like they could see a little snow mid week and then some clearing into the weekend... obviously wind will be a factor... but, looks like it could be a decent weekend to get the van up there for a few days of touring out of Bunny Flat.
I was up there for a quick lap with the dogs on Thanksgiving day, and it was awesome. Legit foot+ of great pow, coverage great at the parking lot. Tons of people out with kids sledding right at the lot. People were also out on snowmos. Then over the weekend it got dumped on again. I drove up to the lot on Monday night on the way back home, and it was full-on winter up there. Tons of coverage at the Bunny Flat lot, snow down to the lower gate on the road. Of course the winds were nuking in the storms so not sure how it is up above treeline. Bet you could get in some good pow turns down low though.
Pic from Thanksgiving day:
On a side note, while I was out there with the dogs I lost my Garmin Alpha GPS tracker that I use for the dogs. So if anyone finds one of these up there please PM me:

Went out to Lassen on Sun. Earlier last week the forecast looked really good for the storm, but then it warmed up and it ended up raining really high. But there was some snow afterward so not all was lost. It wasn't nipple-deep pow, but it was fun out there (and it was nice to actually be able to see!).
We went out towards Mt. Diller. Climbed the south chute (upper right in this pic). There was already a booter in there, from maybe Fri?
Once in the chute itself it became pretty solid, made things interesting on the way down. Also it was sunny and the warming rocks started sending down a bunch of ice chunks as they peeled off. Yay.
Lots of ice chunk waterfalls off this wall:
Near the top, mostly icy.
Snow on the north side didn't look that good either. Nice views though! Looking off towards Lassen itself:
And the other way:
Dropping! Brokeoff in the background. This would be a really fun line in pow, but I doubt it sees conditions like that very often. It's probably usually like how it was when we rode it, which was mostly hard and... "noisy".
We then did some short laps by a cool feature that had some nice terrain and held some of the best snow of the day.
It was crazy how it had rained a bunch and then got cold, so all the trees were essentially encased in solid ice.
Random line there that probably never fills in enough to do, but would be sweet if it did:
Another fun line:
Fun day, and there was coverage on the road all the way back to the lot.
Sweet
I didn't believe in reincarnation when I was your age either.

One of my favorite parts of going to Chico state years ago was that I was 55 minutes door to door to the south entrance of LNP. One of the most under utilized National parks IMO. Thanks for the pics and stoke!

Grey Butte??
Hello darkness my old friend
^ yup
Was up at the South entrance of Lassen on Saturday. The snow walls flanking the path into the visitor center are damn near 11 foot high. Made it up above the sulfur works for some short mellow turns in the trees (had the girlfriend in tow on snowshoes so couldn't do anything too rad) and it was snowing the whole time getting denser as the day went on. At about 1:30 when we got back to the car is was a mix of rain and snow. This summer is gonna be good for some volcano skiing that's for sure. Obligatory stoke pic.Not sure why it's sideways though.....
Wait for next year
Whats laying at Bunny right now?
