dude...I just came in here to post the same exact thing and you beat me to it.

I got selected too! I'm in for the Death Ride!

But yeah, shit, I'm happy in the pants, but also sad in the pants too

And yup...Mrs. Shoe got picked and our friend Bryan did as well, so it looks like we are all in there.

So lph, you now have no excuse to NOT race Downieville! This only 2 weeks or prior to the Downieville races....just look at it is a training ride!!

    Death Ride

    LPH,

If you decide to pass on the Death Ride, I might be interested in buying your spot (I think you can still do that, right). Although, I'll need at least a day's notice.

I had to cancel my July Alps ride -- http://www.yjadventures.com/route.html
so the Death Ride is a now an option.

Besides, there's at least 2 benefits:

    1) I'd rather puke in the CA Alps than the French Alps

    2) 129 miles, 15K feet in one day sounds a lot better than 1128 miles and 120,777 feet in 14 days.

Either way, I expect to ride with you at Downieville.
Life is not a dress rehearsal.

Oh, don't get me wrong, i signed up for the ride and i am definitely doing it. it just feels kind of like a mixed blessing.

shoe and mrs. shoe, goddamned that makes me so happy to know you guys got chosen as well. thank the lord, you will be there to share the pain. good thing is it means you guys will be coming up this spring to ride some of the mountain passes, you are going to friggin love it. passes will probably open for bikes when there are still 10 foot snowbanks on the sides.

well, at this point it makes downieville look alot easier. only problem is i don't have a xc bike, i guess i could borrow or rent one. I will think about it.

nater, what weight is the clydesdale? i am 210 right now, but if i train for the death ride, i might just get under 200, which hasn't happened in about 8 years.

Clydesday is 200. Just make sure you are "well hydrated" before the ride and you'll probably be fine unless you really loose a lot of weight.

I'm at 225 and would be very surprised if I dropped too low for the Downieville on.

    holy crap. you're nuts.

I'm so happy I didn't inherit the same crazy genes. I'm not sure where you got them - from dad maybe?

anyhow, I'll also hand you a beer at the end!

In all seriousness - that's very, very cool. I have some friends who've done and been so happy they did!

What's the date? I'll want to be there to cheer you guys on!

wsd -- The death ride is on July 9th.

lph -- dude, you can race downieville on your Heckler. heck, it's not a SuperLight or a race hardtail, but crap, after the initial climbs, it's basically all downhill! I'm wishing my Superlight had some extra travel for this...hmmmmm.....

anyhoo, I'm stoked for the Death Ride. And I know I'm gonna be hurtin, because once I'm able to ski in May...I know I'm going to be spending alot of May and June weekends BC skiing rather than getting in long rides....hopefully skinning will help.....we'll see...

Strange, since you always refer to a 5-spot as a xc bike.

Not for me! After I hurt my knee, I held off on the lottery - I am doubting I would be ready for that kind of ride 3 months post-op.

COOL!! Congrats to both of you!

I remember when I first heard of the Death Ride. It was in June of 95 (back when I was handsome and in shape) and I was on my way to Western States. I drove up Monitor Pass and pulled over to take a break and ended up falling asleep. I awoke to sounds of conversation. A small group of cyclists had ascended the pass and were taking a break. I woke up to their discussion on the Death Ride- even mentioned that in my journal. I almost entered a year or two later.

chilii --- All that I can do nowadays is ride, so I'm always up for training rides.

I have done the D-Ride twice, in '02 and '03, and was thinking about it again this year, but looks like i missed the registration deadline (oh damn! )

let me be frank, Frank: its a bitch, especially if ya do all 5 summits and all 16k of climbing. I have never been so beat down and as tired as on those rides....

the last year i did it, i bonked big time, as i was dehydrated as it was wicked hot out that day...couldn't get any more fluids down, the gatoraide/poweraide stuff was making me feel sick towards the end of the day, and i was on that last hell'ish climb, when my "buddy" started laughing hysterically...I thought he was losing it like me.....and i was like "whats so funny?" and he goes "dude, you have a HUGE salt stain from your neck to the crack of yer ass...you are for sure gonna bonk soon..."

sure enough.....i hit the wall, and pulled over and collapsed for a while...but the other riders and support peeps (btw, this ride is awesome for its support, aid stations, snack stops, etc...they have it dialed) helped me back on and gave me some "help" on the last bit of climb.....

    anyway, have fun!

Is it true that you can show up early the day of and take peoples spots when they don't show??

I really want to do this.

edit: just put my name on the wait list, though Im sure its at least 13 miles long.

pretty sure i got you a spot through a LBS. I gave him your name and he was gonna sign you up.

    Misery loves company

Oh, and AKA you are correct, blue lakes is not an alternate to Carson, it is an extra pass for those who want to add to the ride (fuckin maniacs)

The LBS also has an entry level roadie for 599 bucks. (trek 1000). Aluminum frame with carbon fork and tiagra components. I got some pedals and cleats i could give you and then you would be all set.

I got it set up with a Zocchi Z1 FR QR20, so i guess i would see it as a 'trail bike?' Everything seems a bit arbitrary to me, and i haven't ridden it yet, so we will see.

No, but this caught the Rat's attention

Yo, lph, would you be up for a training ride at the end of the month? I'll be passing through, to & from the Mammoth mini. Can bring bikey. Anyone else?

Yeah, it's a trail bike. Is it a freeride bike? Obviously not. But if you wanna compare it to say a Blur, it's way more bomber. From what I can gather, I would destroy a Blur. My 5-Spot just keeps suckin' up the hits. Nothing bent, nothing broken...except maybe my pride...

Ya, i am sure there will be at least a couple of us up for some training rides. When are you thinking, i will not be going to the mini, gotta work, might have a day off the week after the mini.

I agree, Arty, I think you would destroy a blur (a real xc bike). I think you would have folded the frame on the diving board on Porcupine rim.
