Is "Hard Core" Music? or am I an old fart?

I like loud, angry, thrashing music.
I like talentless 3 chord music.

I just don't get Hard Core.
To me, it is non-musical angry screaming.
If the backup band were more musical, that might help.

Am I just getting too old?
I like so many types of music, but this one I can't get, and I have tried.

Do I need different drugs? Amphetamines? Horse tranquilizers?

I didn't even know its name until I asked a friend who is a small studio owner. He told me its called Hard Core.
He told me there is a subset of Hard Core that is skinhead Nazi Hard Core.

He also told me that a fellow producer friend quit the business after a Hard Core session where the "singer" (if you can call them that) wanted to do another take because his notes were "flat"

For those that like it, please educate me:
    Is it music?
Do you sing along? Or do you scream along?
It hurts my throat to scream like that - how do they do it for hours at a show?
who are the pioneers of this genre - when did it start?
Who is the best at it?
Who is most likely to get me to like it? Perhaps something with a slightly tonal band, but would that qualify as Hard core?
Is hard core just the screaming? Or is the non-musical background instrumentation also required?

Flame away - I am a "Hard Core JONG"

I honestly don't know much hardcore that's out there today...but when I was a young buck, we listened to:

    Slapshot
    Minor Threat
    The Misfits
    Straw Dogs
    Operation Ivy
    Black Flag
    Agent Orange
    Suicidal Tendencies
    DROPKICK MURPHYS!!!!
    Pantera

Those are the ones I can think of right now. As with any music genre, some of the bands out there are kick ass, others suck ass....I don't like every hardcore band I've ever heard, but I do like some of them. A bunch of the stuff in some of the huckslut movies is crappy angry stupid hardcore as far as I can tell. There definitely IS good hardcore out there in the world though.

Edit: and you're prolly too old.

    Yeah, must be getting old.
Remember Black Flag and dropkick Murphys.
That's actually musical in comparison to some of the shit I hear on college radio.

The shit I don't get is just angry screaming AND out of control noise and distortion.

Some of the scream music actually has raging guitar for backup, and I can handle that, cause theres something musical going on. I just focus on the guitar and the driving beat. That hard core reminds me of metal in many ways (not that I was a metal head, but I at least understand it).

Oh well, I guess Depends undergarments are just around the corner.

OTOH, most of the shit on college radio these days is frickin awesome.

I think that hard core is in your past when you get laid really well a lot. This sometimes happens early in one's life, late, or never.

    Dude, that hurts.

I have never ever liked him. I don't even like Genesis.

The only time I truly enjoyed him was his presence on South Park with Timmy and Lords of the Underworld.

Ha, just kidding. I used to think early Genesis was sort of cool (still do, actually). Then Phil Collins had his lobotomy (you try playing "Sussudio" to arena audiences every night). And I agree with you that most hard core probably sucks and isn't musical, but it was more fun to make the Phil Collins crack.

heh...hardcore....damn, I wasted a lot of my youth at hardcore shows while in high school and college...not as much as Greydon Clark of course, but enough.

still pop it in once in awhile while I'm working or before skiing...I'm usually into the east coast straight-edge / posi-core stuff like Comin Correct, 25 'ta Life, Krutch, Mushmouth.

ScottG -- For some more melodic hardcore stuff with less chugga-chugga guitars and yelling/tough-guy stuff, check out Quicksand "Slip" ('circa '93...fuggin classic) and Lifetime "Hello Bastards" (circa...'96 or '97 maybe?). Lifetime is kinda more punk that hardcore, but they were always going after that "melodic hardcore" sound. Thier second release "Jersey's Best Dancers" is really good too, but "Bastards" just set the standard. Lifetime's stuff can be found at www.jadetree.com. Quicksand might be called post-hardcore by the music-nerd-types 'cause a bunch of them got their start in more traditional sounding hardcore bands, but whatever....it's good shit. Quicksand's Slip is on iTunes if you want to check it out.

heh...and it looks like my friends that I grew up with in the Hardcore scene in Pennsylvania are still at it and are kicking some ass apparently. I hear they're really big in Hungary and Germany -> www.strengthforareason.com Nanticoke, PA represent

Check out Breather Resist, they are Christian folk rock and much loved by geriatric soft cocks world wide. You’ll love them.
The trumpet scatters its awful sound Over the graves of all lands Summoning all before the throne
