How Vinman got shut out in SLC TR/ Bro review included

So yeah I got shut out. No pow pow for the Vinman on my pigrimage to SLC this year. But I still had fun.

    Day 1: Skied with Stump.

We met up at Collins and skied until Stump had to leave for work. Thanks for the tour mang. After stump left I headed for baldy and a 40 min suferfest of a hike for my EC legs and lungs after skiing hard with stump for a few hours. I got passed by several more acclimated hikers. But baldy was worth it. I skied the main chute (farthest/biggest skiers left) Although it was not fresh it was still pretty soft, prolly the softest snow on the mtn at the time. After that I was toast.

Day 2: Met up with altachic and bombed groomers for a few hours until she had to split.
While on collins we had a KIR moment with a touron.
He was the typical flatland touron with the dead giveaway being the sunscreen slatered onto his nose, goggles and upper lip, jacket battened down for the fridgid 40 degree bluebird day. Upon eyeing the Bros for a minute or two he asks "So do those help you in the air?" to which I am not sure what to say but reply "uhh.... I guess but I haven't hucked anything on them yet." He comes back with "hucking whats that?" to which I did not know what to say except "you know jumping off stuff". After that it was a blur of me and AC laughing at this guy and him not knowing what we were laughing at. Prolly funnier than it sounds, guess you had to be there.

After AC split I went in search of any kind of softness I could find. this ended up with me doing the left leg sufferefest up East Castle. I was rewarded with some soft avy debris and a few untracked turns here and there on some steep terrain. Followed this up with more left leg sufferage up EBT and dropping into perla's (sp?) for some soft snow. Note to self Bring skins and touring gear next time.

Day 3: Park City with Mrs. Vinman and the Bro/Sis-in-Law. Basically crusied around the groomers in the sun. Later that night we went to the porcupine to meet up with some maggots for dinner and drinks. It was cool to put some faces to the names.

Day 4: Solisunday with BobMc. Got to the mtn about 11:00 and Bob gave me the tour. We found some of the best snow of my trip out in Crystal Point. Freshies almost a week after the last storm. Bob took a ton of pics and I got a few of him.

Day 5: Snowbird with Mrs. Vinman. I have never really noticed this before since I don't ski the beginner terrain much, but snowbird is not beginner friendly. Mrs. V had a tough time with the narrow cat tracks and such. Combine those with the flat light and it made for a tough day for Mrs. V on her board. I was this close to chasing down a dickhead who buzzed her and rage called her for falling on the Dick Bass cat track. She came around the corner on the DBH and fell. Then Capt. Extremo Obvious comes flying around the corner and rage calls "not a great place to stop", as if she were just lounging around there on the cat track taking a break. Hey asshole DBH is listed as green on the trail map and shes a beginner boarder plus it is your reponsibility to be under control and avoid the downhill skier (sorry for the epicesque rant). I wish I could have caught him and punched him in the neck.

To top it off it starts to snow at 2:00 pm on the last day I was skiing.

All in all it was a good trip despite the lack of pow. It was good just to get out and ski some bigger terrain and meet a bunch of maggots.

The way back was more of the same. Shut out on pow. As we are flying back a storm is raging in VT dropping close to a foot or more in N. VT. But in the spirit of the trip I was shut out yet again, getting stuck in NYC overnight and missing the pow.....again. We end up having to get up at 4:00 am this morning to amke a 6:00 am flight to Boston so we can finally connect to Burlington. We got home roughly 28 hours after we left SLC yesterday. And then I had to come to work....and here I still am working on about 4 hrs sleep.

But it is starting to looking up. The snow continues to fall with some wind mixed in for good measure to fill in the trees. I'll be skiing tomorrow and the EC summit is this weekend.

    ****Stiff BRO REVIEW*****
    Skier: 5"8", 145lb soaking wet.
Previous fat skis : scratch BC

I have now gotten to ski the Bros in almost every condition from thigh deep pow in the notch, ice, sun crust, moguls, groomers, trees, soft avy debris and everything in between.

The first couple days on them I struggled with finding my balance point on them. I just could not make them get up on edge and stay there. I think this was more a a skier problem than a ski issue though. But this is somewhat understandable considering that I had just come off a 66mm waisted 178cm all Mtn ski.

But after maybe 2 days on them they started to feel more and more comfortable. Now I can roll my ankle and lean in and giv'er hell just like Splat said to do. I truly am surprised at the versatility of this ski.

Groomers and ice: holds a good carve in "firm conditions"

moguls: while not the ideal mogul ski they can be finessed though some decent sized bumps without too much effort. Suprisingly quick from edge to edge.

Soft Snow: (cut up crud/soft avy debris etc) Plows through with no problem, stable and damp. Might be one of the best skis I have skied in this type of condition.

    POW: nuff said there

Trees: this was my main concern about buying a 188 cm ski. I was worried that they would be too long for tight spots in the trees. Wrong. The light weight of these makes them easy to throw around if needed.

Side Note: got to flex the soft bros with the fir core, and I am glad I went with the stiff. I think that ski would have been to soft for me. The only down note that I can find with the Bro's is that when I get tired, they start to throw me around. But some of that was related to my EC legs and lungs on the first couple days out in UT

Thats funny cause I say that to people all the time. Expecially when they stop in blind areas such as rollovers and corners of cat tracks. Sounds like he was trying to help more that hurt.

Sorry to hear about the shut out, Vinman. You deserve better Karma than that just for the medical info you dispense in here. I appreciate the Bro review, as I've been considering a purchase for next year as a coming out gift for my new acl. It could be an insane march here in the east, if that's any consolation.

Great to meet and ski with you Vin. The best part of your trip was driving around in circles finding the house.

Oh, and skiing fast didn't suck either.

Glad you had a good trip out here.

Edit: Mr. Sunblock was pretty damn funny...that was classic

Upon eyeing the Bros for a minute or two he asks "So do those help you in the air?"
He was either joking about the graphics, or dumbfounded at the incompatibility of the length/width/stiffness to your diminutive frame. Glad I could help.

^ this guy is the fucking shit!

nice report vin. utah with your significant other is all about blocking and deflecting rage calls. its like being in a third world country where you have to keep your wallet in your undies, you always have the head on a swivel.

Glad you had fun, Vin, but one look at the Snowbird Trailmap should have shown you the beginner-unfriendliness of SB. Hopefully it challenged her in a positive way.

I don't consider what the guy said a ragecall, Vin. Many people don't understand that lying/lounging around in a blind area (even on a cattrack) is dangerous not just for themselves, but for others as well. How was he supposed to know that she was a beginner? I see supposed "expert" snowboarders sitting around in the worst places simply because they feel like it. Of course he could have conveyed that sentiment a bit better, or stop and help her clear the area.

...and yes, PowHo, you're a dick...

They call me sputnik. Girls dig the large cranium though.

I'll see if I can get an official ruling on the "ragecall" next time the alta lineup is in full effect and all the experts are present.

I knew I should not have posted the possible rage call incident. But it was dumb on his part to assume she was just stopping there for the fun of it. It was obvious that I was standing uphill to block for her. Mrs. V even innocently replied "I'm trying" as I yelled after him to shut his trap. Even if it were not a true rage call dude didn't need to say anything at all. She knew she was in the way and was trying to get up as fast as she could. I still would have liked to punch him in the neck.

It also kind of made me realize something about myself too. I ski fast on groomers and have prolly buzzed some beginners unintentionally. After seeing how nervous Mrs V was, I'll prolly try ot give them some more room from now on.

And as for SB not being beginner friendly, it never occurred to me, trail map or not. That was my mistake. We would have been better off going to PC or someplace else like that with wider greens and blues for her to cruise. I've skied SB many times before but rarely frequent the greens except to access a lift. My bad.

That's probably the quickest & politest way to warn someone that they're in a blind spot, regardless of how one got there. I guess local skiers are all dicks, but they know where the blind spots are.

Oh well. No harm, no foul, right?
