i tour with one whippet (right hand) and use it just as a climbing aid while climbing with or without crampons. never had to arrest as i never fall while descending on skis (put a hand down a time or two some years back tho)

another way i use it is to hold me in place up high in a steep gully (couloir out west/yurp) while kicking slab free that is sitting over an icy/firm bed surface before proceeding to descend.

    love thy whippet

I have two whippets. They are nice for ascent. Sometimes on icy spring descent they are a safety blanket (and probably as useful). Obviously, nobody takes their whippets out thinking it is a good exposure mitigation tool for avalanches. I like my older whippet where I can remove the pick on descent. I watched that video again... it don't look like has two whippets dug in as one arm is definitely downhill... can't see the other arm. Maybe it did help him arrest on the bed surface though. As the title said..

Exactly, it was just dropping into the line. If there is a lesson, it is that if you poke the dragon enough in winter conditions in Colorado, you're gonna get burned. Fuckin' Lucky is right.
