    TR: Sabine river whites

My mission this spring has been to learn to fish the white bass run with a fly rod. We used to fish for these with a zebbco when I was a little kid, but I haven't fished for them since. I've been hitting some small local creeks hard with some success.

So this weekend I headed to the TX/LA border to meet my dad. He's been fishing for them all his life with conventional tackle but had never tried them on a fly and admitted he was a little skeptical.

welcome to east texas, I guess

We found them quick, and the first three casts with from three different rods/flys all resulted in fish. My old man was grinning like a little kid.

    They were hungry

After landing a few, I tied on the first and (so far) only fly that I have tied. I missed a strike and then success! Awesome feeling.

With the wind picking up ahead of some weather we headed in a little after noon. Easily the most fun I've had fishing for these guys. Looking forward to the next month or two.

    Taco Time.

Well more than anything, it just happened to be the fly that was being tied the first time I went to a weekly fly tying class at a local shop, so I was bound and determined to catch something on it. Just a clouser with the lip added, and the bucktail tied all on one side of the hook. The way it was explained is that the lip is supposed to make it ascend sharply when stripped and it gives it a nice wiggle when stripped or falling.

There's nothing better than seeing a big grin on the person's face who taught you the joy of fishing. Sort of an affirmation that he succeeded. Great report.
