I can't imagine 10 feet being big enough for the contest (unless that means 10 feet on the back of the wave and a 20 foot face? wave jong here, for sure).
If I hear anything I'll post it. I'm on the mavs listserve and I haven't gotten anything yet. I'll also check here and if it happens, I'll try to get down there and take some pix.

anyone know what happened to the mavsurfer cam?

wave face size for wed: my 10@17 was open ocean data buoy info, not mavs face size. You are in the right ballpark with the 2x face height. I'm not very tuned into the interpretation of the NOAA/NWS data buoys, wind, tides, direction and so on but there is stormsurf.com that has a forcast and lots of info and forcast tips. So swell is coming in, hopefully everything else works out as well. stormsurf says:

Surf Forecast
North California: Expect swell arrival starting Tuesday (3/1) at 6 PM with period 21 secs and size small but building. Period turning to 20 secs at 9 PM. Swell to start peaking at 4 AM Wednesday (3/2) as period drops to 18 secs and holding through 3 PM with pure swell 7.4-7.8 ft @ 17-18 secs and seas 11.5 ft @ 17 secs (13-14 ft) with imbedded larger sets occasionally. Period turning to 17 secs at 10 AM. Consistent in the 17-18 sec band with a solid number of waves per set due to virtual fetch. Swell Direction: 290-296 degrees

so this looks like 10-15ft faces at least, but Mavs usually gets a bit bigger due to its particulars. also, "solid number of waves per set" sounds good too, suggesting lots of surfing vs. waiting around bobbing.
no idea what happened to the mavs cams but they are selling web broadcasts so maybe they cut deals.
hop, jet on over, but post some screen captures from Pro Surfer first![]()
I think I've got the OK from the Boss so I'll be biking in from Montara or maybe Pacifica. I'm thinking cliff by the airport but I have no idea what the contest organizers have in mind for spectators.
nice. not sure I'll be able to make it this year, but maybe I can get into work late. they usually start pretty early.
You can watch from other side of the fence on the cliff - either the south side, where you park in the lot and hike on the pavement to the beach and then hoof up the steep cliff.
Or, you can park in the lot and hike up the trail to the north side of the fence. Most photographers go to the south side of the fence, if I'm correct, so that's a better vantage point for the most part.
Oh, and I'm definitely rooting for Hop. I hope he finally takes the title away from Flea this year.

thanks for the beta. sfgate.com says 30-35' faces and 25,000-50,000 spectators. is that a realistic crowd estimate???? seems like a lot, SBC park is 40K. hmmmm...
25k? whoa. that seems way high. If there are 25k people there, you won't see jackshit.
I was there last year and there maybe a couple thousand, though it didn't even seem like that much. However, last year the waves were maybe 12-15, so maybe it wasn't as much of a draw.
I'd be shocked if there were that many there tomorrow.
Edit: well - just read some of the info and it sounds like they estimate 15k were there last year. i suppose over the course of the day, that makes sense.
I'm going to try to move a meeting so that I can be out there in the morning. I'll definitely catch the first heat at 8. Just gonna ride my bike over and hope it's not too rainy! I'll probably go to the Brewery after the invite only party at 8.
Anyone else going?
I'm going to cross post over in ski to make sure the sf mags see this....

Hey gang,
Yesterday’s contest was insane! Great Job from Jeff Clark, Katherine
Clark and the rest of the Mavericks Contest Crew.
Mavericks 2005 Champion Anthony Tashnick put in a solid
performance all day long and finished it off in the finals catching the best
big waves. The event was held in solid fifteen to eighteen foot surf
with the occasional twenty foot set. At one point Shane Desmond from
Santa Cruz dropped into what some are calling a twenty five footer
with a fifty foot face. That wave would have made the tow crews envious.
Greg Long and Zach Wormhoudt also bagged a couple of giant ones.
Matt Ambrose was awarded the Jay Moriarity Award
for his continued dedication and hard charging spirit. Matt was one
of the notorious Pedro Point crew who was introduced to the spot
by Jeff Clark early on and hasn't stopped charging ever since. The
Reactor Watch Award was presented to Ryan Augustine. One of Mavericks
newest chargers who is following in the footsteps of Flea, Peter Mel and
the rest of the Santa Cruz Hellmen. Missing from this years event was
three time Champion Darryl Flea Virostko. Flea injured his knee at
the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Event and couldn't surf in the contest. Be he was
out on a boat cheering on Anthony Tashnick and the rest of the
Santa Cruz Westside contingent.
The water angle is now up. You can check the photos out at -

We will have the cliff angle and some great video clips up shortly.
NBC will be broadcasting the event soon. We’ll keep you posted.
