Mining the Miner. A dump for resource folks.

Figured after a few discussions that a thread dedicated to the mags in the resource world was worthwhile. Be it for skiing outings, employment considerations, general nonsense (a major part of my job) and everything else in between.

I'm in Vancouver and work for a private minex firm, M&A research and generative project development. Logging a lot of desk hours these days, and VERY happy to be employed.

PDAC is next week - Who's rallying out? Would it be worthwhile to arrange a Mag (or Mag-Jong JV) hookup in Toronto?

Foreman: I don't care who bloody started it. What's it about?

Second Miner: Well, he said the bloody Treaty of Utrecht was 1713.

Got some work opportunities in Africa, Gabon Iron, Mauritiana and Mozambique Au exploration, have previously only worked in NZ and Canada, any idea what to expect in a junior geo position? I have a crippling phobia of snakes but that's about all I'm worried about.

Working in Africa can be pretty fun. The people are friendly (in my experience) and the scenery is great. Everything that I have worked on over there in the field (exploration and dev. projects only) generally had only a few expats on site (ie. management/consultants). Even in the remote camps in Central Africa the conditions have always been pretty good. The biggest issue I always had problems with was logistics and equipment. Things were always hard to find, and always late to arrive. I remember one project where I had to wait 4 months for my equipment while it sat off the coast of the Ivory Coast in a boat. You learn to do more with less, and become more creative.

If you are only looking at a 3-6 month stint, then pick a project that interests you the most technically, or based on who you would be working for (if you have some knowledge of them). It is certainly different that what you've experienced in NZ and Canada, but the overiding issues will all still be the same.

As far as snakes - I've seen a green mamba come through the ceiling of my office before in a camp over there. Even the moths are snakes......

Thanks^ anyone managed to get some turns in field areas?
If I was heading back to YT this year I'd be bringing a touring rig. Could almost make early season heli prospecting easier

I've attached some side trips to ski on the back end of time in camp before. In my experience, fishing is the best camp activity. Was able to get in pretty good with the heli crews on one project in Alaska, and spent a couple of their "off" days with them heli-fishing on some tributaries to the Yukon.

anybody come to "Rock Talk" in Smithers? I seen some of them talking about rocks and "decompressing" from the hectic schedule by skiing up at the hill

^^ good buddy went a few years ago while working for a BC explr'n co. Said it was a riot.

Never been skiing for work, same aforementioned buddy had a sweet summer season of shredding ketza (YT) faces on a drill job. It happens.

I had my mountain bike with me a few seasons ago up in YT, and there was some excellent riding through most of the old prospecting and placer camps/trails.

what better place to hold a meeting than on a 15 min chair ride followed by a run and into the bar ?

Smithers is pretty big in diamond drilling, they got a drillers helper program at the college and there are good skiers in mine offices/drilling/gov/education

If you are a geologist in mining, you may have something in common with Hilter.... (so to speak)

BTW - I'm looking to hire a junior to mid level geologist. Corporate office in south Denver with domestic field work opportunities. Uranium experience is a plus, but I hire more on personality and ambition. PM me for more details if interested.

Junior got a job in a local sand mine driving this.

He is stoked at the opportunity to learn heavy equipment operation.
