Hmm, yeah, at first I was all pissy when I found out, but let's be real, I spend more than that in gas almost every time I go for a bike ride, and then on beer after the ride.

Where is everyone seeing this about Trailforks? I can't find anything about paid subscriptions (which I would 100% buy) on the website, the app, via Google, or in my email. Website still advertises the app as totally free.

It sounds like they’re making the announcement on Monday. It’s been a soft rollout and announcement. I saw it on an app update during the middle of last week, and they’ve communicated some of the details to admins.

You might have seen the 70% off flash sale on TF merchandise at Pinkbike. Trailforks has spun off and are independent now.

It will be $3/month but they’re offering a 50% discount to early subscribers at $18/year.

Guess I'll be using mtbproject exclusively now. Good thing I live in Colorado!

Im kinda surprised at the resentment of charging for something that cost money to create and manage.
a positive attitude will not solve all of your problems, but it may annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

Agreed. How are they supposed to make money? Sell user data to who exactly? People would bitch more about forced ads within the app.

Even though I only ride in BC 95% of the time I’ll sub at the discounted rate.

Every time I ride anywhere but my local trails I wonder how I managed before TF. $18/year is a damn easy call.

What would a subscription cost if TF had to pay for all of the imagery/basemaps and GPS infrastructure? The consumable geospatial data in this country for apps like this, that is essentially free, is pretty cool.

    This.

I've not been riding anywhere but local stuff the last few months.

But can absolutely see getting a subscription
whenever going to other places again.
Can't always get or depend on local beta/beer bribes tours.

In the same boat but yeah, easy call. Not only is it invaluable for me for riding, it’s awesome just exploring and planning future rides and trips. AND I’m totally down to support what they’ve done. Subscribe now while the 1/2 price rate lasts.

Can’t believe people are bitching about this trivial expense and “jumping ship” to MTBP. Trailforks has cost a fortune to bring us this far. Get a grip people.

it's the same people who complained about strava. it's probably the same people who complain whenever they're reminded that facebook owns all the pictures of their kids in the tub that they freely and voluntarily upload to facebook. use whatever you can for free, by all means, switch to the next free thing if you care about the $20 a YEAR, but if you're deeply and genuinely butthurt about this you're a mouth-breathing, drooling, barely sentient dipshit and it's astounding you've managed to live this long without killing yourself by drinking gasoline or something equally dipshitted.

the way american capitalism works isn't rocket science and it isn't some carefully guarded secret either. I wonder if these are the same clowns who get off the subway in times square, get handed a mixtape, and then are shocked and appalled when the guy wants $20 for it.

It isn't free above certain volumes and resolutions, or timeliness.

Your rant implies that there are no alternatives. Capitalism says some people will jump ship to MTBP which is still free (and until recently had better trail coverage where I live, nowhere near CO).

I don’t have a dog in this fight, and will gladly pay for TF if I’m riding new trails that aren’t well covered in MTBP. At home, I just need conditions updates for backcountry rides, which I know I can reliably get from MTBP.

I mean, by all means use whatever is currently free if that works for you, I don't like throwing money away either. But if a private company is giving you something for free it means 1) they are a bunch of braindead buffoons burning money into the ground and will be out of business soon, 2) they are harvesting information from the thing you use "for free" and selling that, or 3) it's just free samples til they get the market penetration or userbase loyalty to enable them to charge. I just find it hilarious and obnoxious when people get bent out of shape about this sort of thing. It's like they spent all summer munching on free cookie samples at the supermarket and now are acting betrayed when the cookie company wants them to pay for a box; what did they think was happening here?

Anyway TF is really nice around here at least. Sorry that MTBR thread just gave me an aneurysm apparently.

As has been stated before, the main reason some people are pissed is because Trailforks marketed themselves as ‘free and always will be’. Personally I don’t care too much about their dishonesty ... I signed up last week for paid TF membership... but yeah any company that traffics in your data needs to be transparent and not stupid. Companies that are more honest use marketing slogans like ‘currently free as we build our base’ etc.

Speaking of stupid, this episode has revealed the innumeracy of the TF staff (they fucked up the simple task of describing the area of free coverage) and their illiteracy (the FAQ on the Pro topic keeps getting revised yet is littered with typos/errors).

Sort of, Pinkbike said that and TF is becoming independent from Pinkbike. I stand by my original point--the annual cost is 1/4 of what one good tire costs. If you're insulted by that (not you, personally, Mr. Fro) you're beyond saving.

Some people still do and that option is available to everybody. OTOH, people have always carried maps, now you can just carry every map everywhere you go. Just like new bikes vs. old bikes, people use the new shit because it's better.

I'm not insulted, just like I wasn't insulted that strava changed. Disappointed, though, and for now won't be paying (same as with strava). Yes, it's not expensive, but if you add up all the "not expensive" subscriptions that I'm "supposed to" pay for, it's a lot. I'm generally broke, I'm riding a 12 year old bike, and yes, I could pay the $18 but it doesn't provide me enough utility when 98% of my riding is on trails that don't require I use a tracking app.

I don’t use Strava or TF for tracking, but I use the shit outta TF when traveling to other regions. I prefer the interface vs mtbproject’s. And TF has a solid approach to getting your donations steered to the trail associations you benefit from.

You can always look at the website before you go out, if you're too cheap to pay for the Pro app. I survived a lot of years riding without any apps. Just spent a lot of time with my printed Nat geo paper map scratching my head about where exactly I was on said map. Having a GPS device helped with that. Apps like Trailforks make it even easier. Well worth it IMO, especially if they can use the fees to add better functionality. There is still lots of room for improvement.

And yeah, invaluable when visiting new areas. Saved my ass big time on numerous occasions where a trail disappeared through meadows or was hard to follow.
