I got cleared to play golf yesterday, 13 weeks out (my doc is conservative) played 9, used a riding cart, doc said to ride the first couple times, then go to a push cart.
bringing my harley back to life has taken it's toll on my new hip. i took a down payment on it today after having it for 39 years. i am buying a season pass though. water skiing...
you should know better shred. that crippled me for a week 20 years ago after a lifetime of spending the summer skiing every day. that's what motorcycles are for. still have my sport bike... j
Eight months post op. Since I pulled my hamstring, I've keep the training low impact, riding and swimming everyday.
But I closed my pool last weekend, so I added some moderate impact Bosu Ball exercises. Mogul jumps and step off lunges. Today my hip is frickin sore and I have a pretty bad limp.
What are you guys doing for training? Anyone doing high impact?
I'm just under six months out. Last time I saw my doc was at 12 weeks (4 posts up) I asked him what I shouldn't do-he said running, jumping, squats, lunges. So I've been doing stationary bike and eliptical 5 times a week plus walking an hour 5 times a week...
I think I will keep the impacts as low as possible for the mean time. Tried some yoga this morning and that seems pretty good. But I sure do miss the pool, I think that helped me the most.
I considered it and have several friends that have had BHR. But there weren't any surgeons in Chicago, that had a lot of experience doing the procedure.
I ended up going to one of the better Otho's in Aspen and telling him he didn't have a chance in hell of doing my procedure. But knowing that I'm an avid skier, what procedure would you recommend?
So that's what I did. All of the surgeons biggest concerns with BHR was the metal on metal surfaces.
I sent my film to Phillipon and filled out a bunch of questionnaires. But all I ever got back, was a secretary called and said "you aren't a candidate".
the failure rate or his?
kicking my motorcycle did some damage i'm afraid, daily pain again plus i have been cutting firewood, lots of lifting. seems to help my back but not hips. this is two weeks after getting epidural. wondering if the hip pain is normal after ten months?
hey, i am from northern michigan, charlevoix/ east jordan and most stop surfing in the winter. i have canoed through ice but labor day is it for the week-end warriors. good luck all. j
Sorry to hear your in pain. I have a little, but it's fairly minimal. I'm planning on skiing five days each, Highlands opener 12/12, Xmas 12/26, cat trip 1/9 and XGames 1/23.
We'll see how we do?
just going to chime in here.
My story is in another thread, but I shredded my femur ball joint, and socket in a dirtbike accident, along with 4 broke ribs, broke shoulder, and 4 broke vertebrae. They replaced the top 12" or so of femur.
From impact to where I landed was 96ft.
They screwed my socket back together with 6 screws, and put in a porcelain joint, as mine was splintered. all hip/butt muscles were completely shredded as the bone cut through all of them.
My point is, I walked on my own yesterday for the first time, as per doctor instruction to bear no weight for that period.
I have not had hip pain at all since operation, 0 pain. The ribs, and tail were much worse.
I have never broke a bone prior,or had an operation.
My muscles hurt like a bitch, but no joint pain. I am thinking 1-2 weeks, and I will be 90-95%. I still need the socket to heal before getting crazy.
I am already walking normal, using tractor, 4 wheeler, uneven surfaces.,etc
As bad as mine was, I am going to say, you should not have any pain if done right.
Mine was done in El Paso, and they told me they were going to make me wait 2 days after accident, so that I could get the best ortho they had, I was pissed, but now I am so glad I waited..So far, it has been much easier than first thought.
The doctor made the comment, that the only people he had seen with this much trauma were dead.
I am sorry the story is so long, but I am so happy, and thrilled to be able to walk again, and so blessed to have such a good doctor, and family to support me.
Just in case you want an opinion, this is my doctor. He is a professor for Texas Tech

When I got out of the hospital my daughter asked if I could try to feel good enough to play a round of golf with her. I told her I would try, but doubted it.
I made a promise that if I could remotely get close enough I would do it.
Today was the day, 80 degrees outside, and I felt pretty good.
I only had a half swing, because right side ribs were broke, and left hip replaced, so it was hard to swing through.
Ended up with a 40 for 9 holes, as kept by my daughter, but I think she fudged it a bit to make me feel better. I am thinking closer to a 45.
Don't care, had a great day out on the links with my daughter.
For less than 6 wks out, I call it a victory day.
hi all, almost a year after surgery and i am still having the same pains. my back is the culprit and it's quite possible i didn't even need a hip replacement. my lumbar discs are all damaged and in one spot, pushing on the nerve that goes down my right leg causing pain down my leg as well as my hip... i know a guy that had his hip done before i did and now the doctors are telling him to have the other one done because his hips are causing back pain. what a racket. any xray of a life long ski bum will show a worn out hip i'd bet on it. my other side looked worse to me but the pain was on the right. don't jump into anything...
anyway, i am packed to go up and ski for the first time today.
well i skied seven runs no problem, one at 3/4 speed. actually less pain than walking. feel much better and only quit for the day thinking about how i might feel in the morning.
i would suggest that anyone contemplating hip replacement, that also has back issues in the lumbar see if they can get an epidural. they shoot steroids right into the lumbar area where the nerve for the leg is. if the hip pain goes away there is a vary good chance it is nerve pain and not originating in the hip. in my case all the pain below my waist except for my hip went away so it was my hip hurting and the other leg and back pain was from the nerve in my back.
when i last skied my hip was really bad when i drove my edge into the mt. carving a turn, as in screaming pain. that pain is gone with new hip. (happy face here). back is another story but what a great day to be skiing again! good luck all, j
12/12 was ten months post op and my first day back on the hill since my THR.
Conditions were excellent, but I still started out pretty slow, making very easy controlled carves. By the end of the day I did a couple of DD expert runs.
Day two I did a high speed cruiser day with the wife out at Snowmass.
Day three, first chair 1A Aspen Mountain.
Charged with the big boys, till I jammed my hip into a dip in some flat light at around 2pm.
Days 4 & 5
Feeling the hip a bit, knee's too, but still skiing at a high level. Mixing in a few groomers, in between black runs.
All in all, the hip feels pretty dam good. Knee's might be next.
