I would say no for that. Kohls has cheap suits ($150) that will make you look good. There must be some place around there that would have the same. As a network engineer you're going to have to do plenty of meetings, etc and they want to know you can look good if you need to. I've interviewed for the same positioin before and wouldn't have gone without a suit and tie.

My 14yo son saw me in the morning and said, "Dude, it's an interview. You HAVE to wear a tie!" So I did. Friday I interviewed 9 GIS Specialist candidates. The women were in business suits and all the men but one had on suit and ties. And that's an entry level job. And it's even California!

I actually had an interview last week where I was told specifically NOT to wear a suit. Threw me for a loop. Really small shop- suspect they figure you learn more about someone if they are not in a cookie cutter-ish outfit.

I wore a sport coat (Herb Tarlek special) and slightly scuffed loafers. Oh, and a thong.

I've spent $1K on a suit and some nice shoes at the Men's Wearhouse and I don't think I got much more than the $150 suit if it fits well. It's not all about SWAG. It's just showing them that you will dress up if you need to, you respect the fact that they are taking the time to interview you, and they will surely understand that if you need to you will get some other suit. Nice suits and shitty suits don't bare much difference to the employer. He probably can't tell the difference anyway.
