I've gravitated towards the MTB camp over the Skiing camp the last few years. Riding Whistler on a MTB is hands down better than skiing Whistler...IMO. However, I skied Silverton last Saturday, 12" of fresh, and skiing that area really brings skiing back to life for me (It makes it challenging again). From my perspective, after those 2 epic years of snow (In CO) we all got spoiled. I'm now enjoying skiing once a week in an area or a BC lap rather than trying to race for first chair, or get to 100 days anymore. If you do need a re-energized ski day....get to Silverton. It helped me a lot.
As far as Mountain Biking....it never gets old. I never have to hope its cold and grey out and do some dance. I can ride from my back door, I dont have to run my knees under warm water to get them going, Places like Phils World, Snowmass, are as good as any day on skis. Keystone, Whistler bike parks will make you pucker up without any problem.
Just all my opinion, but give me some warmth and dirt right now and I'd be happy as hell.

Nailed it. Ripping a steep line in bottomless blower is still the coolest feeling I've ever had, but that's a handful of days/year. A bike ride is also just a lot less effort- throw on my shoes, fill the camelback, lube the chain and I'm out the door pedaling in relative solitude for the most part. A typical ski day is layering up, throwing all the gear in the truck, fighting for a decent parking spot, slugging up to the lifts in ski boots, etc.
Also helps that the mtn biking in Utah is pretty incredible.
true that, I regularly sit at the friday nite table for beers with 2 quads who had bike accidents ... makes ya think twice eh
biking is the fastest fix for most people, I was asking about a paddling bud (another time intensive lifestyle sport) and they said "oh yeah buddy has house/ career/ wife/ 2 kids ... quit paddling big into mtn biking "
Trails are real close but I don't seem to ride as much as I did ... do what you love
Pretty much the same, whether Road or MTB.
Besides the fact I can pretty much ride year round where I live, with the very progressive age I am hitting now I'm getting more and more knee joint issues when being on 2 planks and riding harder. Whereas on the bike I exercise just that in a positive way.
Only downside I found is how much money you can shell out for a truly high end bike vs. ski gear. Well...we only live once, no?

Mountain biking, at a certain level, makes skiing seem cheap. That's pretty nuts when you think about it.
If its not going to fucking snow I want to ride my bike. Whats good in Colorado right now? Anybody?
Just about everything on the Front Range is dry and in perfect shape right now.
The only good thing about these warm days on the Front Range is being able to ride and ski all winter, even if the skiing isn't great. Still, I love skiing more as I'm much better at it, and feel more free while doing it. MTB is close though.
I'm in the same boat as you guys. And yes, it's all about easy access. If I lived in Teton Village instead of the Colorado foothills, my preference would be a quick tram lap instead of my daily lunch loop.
Sitting right behind my desk is my lunch-time powder run.
My mental health is better than it ever has been in the past winter months. Even with good snow, I was obsessed with catching storm days and I'd feel so angry if work held up getting out on a good day.
It was stressful. I'm amazed my wife stayed with me through last winter. Colorado front range skiing was shit and it destroyed my mood. This season I've got the bike - great trails are dry and I can ride from my office.
It truly is a game changer. I still am frustrated with the shitty season, but to be honest it's a mild annoyance compared to feeling angry.
MTBing makes me a better person.
I hate those fucking chairs. Old employer had them in the con room, yuck.
Rode Dedisse-Evergreen Mountain Saturday, Bergen Peak from my house Sunday. Pearl Pro spandex with a TNF short under that has the ball warmer windproof thing, leg warmers, ls silkweight under, long sleeve Ibex heavy jersey with a jacket in pocket for coming down. I get cold paws in my Sidi's so I rock those high end Pearl booties, long finger gloves, little liner for head on the down.
Today is my b-day and 70 on flat so I'm going out this afternoon for Bergen, probably do Buff Creek this weekend. Five years ago EV blower, four Berthoud Pass, three LL, two LL, last year-bike.
Right on Poop! While a good day powder skiing or a blue-bird tour are the holy grail to me, it seems like the best say to stay sane is to take what the weather gives you. If I had the time, I'd drive down from the mountains to ride my bike. As of now, I'm working guy trying to get ready for Cham and perhaps a little extended vacation in Feb.
Don't fight it. I am constantly amazed by the number of people hear in CO that just don't get it. In early Dec., half this valley was crying in their collective beer about the shitty skiing. I was driving half and hour the other way, and slaying the trouts. My favorite is when the ski areas close and it keeps skiing. All the emo losers sit around bonged out waiting for summer while the touring is the best of the year.
Friend of mine uses them on his single, similar to those. I picked up a Bontrager Privateer for retro Tuesdays, ControlTech ends-check. They make me feel claustrophobic as hell.
Ran into a guy yesterday while riding. He lives across from Bergen in Hiwan, had the day off so he rode: Bergen Peak, then down to Three Sisters, rode all of that, then down to Lair, rode that then was riding up Kerr Gulch when I saw him. Said he did 70 road this last weekend. Training for a sub 9 Ldvl on single speed.
We rode Buff Creek yesterday: up Kitty, out to chair rock, back to ShingleMill, bottom part of Sandy. All rode incredible. Some dicey spots, some slop, but for the most part tits.
